Default Fire damaged FRS gearbox- Rebuild needed??

A mate gave me a gearbox from a fire damaged Focus.

Now besides the obvious speed sensor being melted, what needs replacing??

I don't want a pointless full rebuild if it doesn't need one.

We've peeped inside it and internally it seems fine. BUT what about any bearings or seals?

I don't want to fit it and find a bunch of bearings instantly shit its pants.

Will it be fucked? What's inside these? Views from gearbox bods?

Cheers

If the casing hasnt melted then its unlikely to have damaged anything inside.

Sweeeet! Sorry no pics, gerabox is at Devil Developments, visiting it in a couple of days.

Nope, casing is fine, it clearly got hot though as we had to smash some melted crusty shit off the outside with a lump hammer and pry bar.

Aye, driveshaft seals, speed sensor and linkage we are onto. Was just unsure if internally there was anything to worry about and from what we could see inside, it all looked fine.

Ok, mint. I'll move forward and hopefully test it very soon. Way i view most of it is that it's been heat treated. Bonus! lol

like you say, imo gears and casing will be fine if a little heat treated lol.

if the casing hasnt cracked after being subject to heat then all i would do is change seals and senso like you say, and aso the gear oil

other than that, i would imagine it would be ok!

some of the bearings run in plastic cages, these will melt under a fire type temp.

a FWD transit gearbox has plastic ball bearing holder type things. Box is almost identical to a frs one.

Plastic cages in a heavy power box?very much doubt that.drain the oil and see what bits come out.also,go to ford and ask what seals/plastics are in the box as your looking to fully rebuild it,they should then give you a full printout and exploded diagram.is it a proper slip diff on them or a fluid filled one like on the rsturbo?could have been affected by the heat although I doubt it.I used a fire damaged box on a series two years ago with no issues.

I had my worries over this (hence the post)

If someone can confirm either way i'll be a happy chappy.

I just don't want to go through with the conversion and then have something go boom on me. If i have to get it rebuilt, i'll take the sting but if i can get away with replacing a few bits it leaves more cash for tyres and mods.

God,I didn't know that!!still, they may well be able to resist the heat as the casing would have sunk a lot of that heat away, worth a shout!!

It's an ATB Quaife diff. That should be fine. Heat treated.

Might be worth it as peace of mind unless someone knows for certain.

The donor car did get seriously hot though, Cochyns old Focus. Very little survived from it.

LOL Simons drawings!

But yes please. Just need some closure on this one. I have been told it will be fine but i've convinced myself that there are plastics and rubbers inside there that will end my fun before it gets started.

Ok,

The bearings in the diff will be ok but the layshaft bearings do indeed run in a plastic casing and these are known to fail under extreme heat. This is the main reason why most bearings fail, the plastic race faisl and leaves the actual bearings loose to do whatever they want to do.

Give Geartech in the Midlands a call on 01299 251261 if you want to chat about them.

Just be aware than when synthetic rubber as in seals burns it turns into/produces hydro flouric acid which burns very nicely!!

Sorry i missed the replies, been out the office all day.

LOL, I can't be havin' balls touching can i Markk........sounds like a long night in with Elton John.

But glad i asked. I was told it should be ok, but i had my suspicions. I really can't be leaving it to chance. Pointless agro when it obviously will die on me when i beast it.

Cheers Jeff, i'll ring em. I need a rapid turnaround on this box. I'll see what they say.

Lol, nail in the coffin. Nice one Tabetha. Looks like rebuild time. I can hear my battered wife of a wallet starting to sob already.

Be reet!
