Few Engine Questions Regards cleaning etc
Ok, basicly ive took one of my engine apart (leaving the pistons/crank etc in place) as i wanted to check bore wear, check the crank etc.
Now, all is well, but before i put it all back together with new gaskets i have a couple of questions.
1) whats the best way to clean the block down ready for painting?
2) whats the best paint to use on the block? hammerite? i dont want it flaking off in a month!
3) cleaning the tops of the pistons, is this reccomended? what should i use to clean them?
4) cleaning the surface of the block where the headgasket sits. any cleaning tips here?
5) the headgasket hadn't gone and was in mint condition still, so do i need to have the head skimmed? im guessing not!
6) cleaning the crank etc? again, reccomended? what should i use?
Basicly, this engine has been sat for about 3 years, but turns over fine, ran fine when was last in a car apparently, i just want to clean it all up and check it over!
Dunc

I use a wire brush in a drill to do any heavy rusted areas of the block, and I use hammerite, seems to stay on, so long as you can get the colour you want.
I always clean the pistons tops, just by scraping with old blunt screwdriver or similar, doesn't do anything makes you feel better though!!
I use stanley blades held in the fingers to scrape the top of the block clean, after stuffing paper towel down the bores to catch any dirt/grit etc.

cheers tabetha!
was going to use a screwdriver, but wanted to check first!
will use a stanley for the surface!
do u use de-greaser etc for the block also? how about cleaning it all off? i dont fancy washing the block down with water afterwards when the pistons will still be in there etc?!

I normally steam clean when I can, don't worry about water, just set engine so pistons are level, then put grease around the edges, turning over again will bring any water to the top, ands stops any water getting past rings, cover oilway in block with a wooden dowel etc.
