Agreed looks like a barry boy feature to buy a '90's performance car challenge. Clarkson obviously getting a Cosworth, Hammond in an M3 and May in some sort of massive engined Merc.

cozmeist, thats an e36 M3 tho, significantly more powerfull than the other 2 cars
if it was a performance challenge then it would seem unfair against the merc and ford but then knowing topgear it will be a more comedy orientated challenge anyway

As said probably be a old car shootout between Cos, Merc 190E 16V and they should have E30 M3 not the E36 in the pic as this was the rival contemporary.
Seems as there covering old ground as fifth gear done a similar thing a while back with Cos and 190E.
If it were E30 the Cos would win, then BMW followed by the Merc, but with the pictured BMW as said it's unfair as is more powerful.

There was a mint Sapph advertised up here for sale, low owners and low miles, a mate of mine rang up for it dying to look at it and buy it and the garage told him Top Gear had bought it. Guess it may be the same car.

Could it be say affordable performance saloons from the 90s?
And yeah clarkson has owned a Escort cossie, plus im sure hes on the Ford payroll so doubt he would let a cossie have a piano dropped on it, unless the filming is near another helicopter piano removal company!

Like I said, could be a challenge to see what you can buy for x amount of money rather than a back to back test. I'm sure a ropey saff, ropey 190E cosworth and ropey M3 would all be about the same sort of price..
EDIT: however, they are all wearing baseball caps, James May is probably taking the piss out of youngsters with their trousers down to their knees and Clarkson is wearing a Team RS jacket. I have an identical one
