As said probably be a old car shootout between Cos, Merc 190E 16V and they should have E30 M3 not the E36 in the pic as this was the rival contemporary.
Seems as there covering old ground as fifth gear done a similar thing a while back with Cos and 190E.
If it were E30 the Cos would win, then BMW followed by the Merc, but with the pictured BMW as said it's unfair as is more powerful.

Well Clarkson is wearing a Team RS jacket so no prizes for guessing what he is most likely to be driving. More than likely May in the Merc and Hammond in the M3 as Hammond likes old school M series BMs.

Clarkson is wearing the RS stuff, May is in a Mclaren Mercedes T-shirt, and Hamster must be wearing BMW stuff, so it'd make sense that May is in the Merc, and Hamster in the beemer! I'm guessing May has got Merc boxers on too or something, hence why his pants are round his ankles

The e30 m3 is the most succesful touring car to date if i remember correctly.

In which case the Merc will have fucked suspension, the M3 will have knocking vanos and the Cossie will be a rolling shell that someones broke.

E30 M3 won more race championships worldwide than RS500 or even GTR. (by playing to different regs) And outcornered the Cossies too.
But I digress.
Expect to be upset guys, Top gear ALWAYS fuck up the "cheaper" cars they buy for their challenges. The only one they haven't deliberately smashed up is the Britcar BMW, but even that got trashed. Top Gear has changed so much into the "entertainment" format that now the average viewer has next to no interest in cars and is of the idea that smashing up/not looking after cars is fun. That Saff looks very standard so it may well have been a good one before they got their hands on it.
As for Hammond saying they get restored. What a load of shit!

Boo fucking hoo who the fuck cares it's a piece of metal not the Mona Lisa. You don't go looking to track down owners that stack or chav their cossies to the max do you so why get in a huff if they do. They won't anyway.

I don't think they will wreck the cos, they have wrecked some nice cars in their time but if it does die it will be because its a cheap one he found somewhere that's already broken lol.
