Default Any 200 Block experts on here ?

Whilst on track last weekend at Croft I dislodged a repair liner in my 200 block that had been fitted ages ago

Well now I think it is time for another block

My question is will a 205 block safely go out to 94mm or am I to look for another 200 block

My MKII Rs2000 runs a 2135cc Pinto 8v head and twin 45's so a well worn 200 block to me is fine but I do have 2 x 205 blocks "in-stock"

Below is a pic of the No4 cylinder

the casting in the 205 blocks are hit and miss at that bore size, more miss tbh, i ran mine at 93.5mm for a good while before it split the oe bore. could have linered it but not much point as i was fitting a differant engine.

my new engine is linered and is a 205 block but nothing at like 94mm

i know my engine builder would prefer to run a 205 block over a lined one he doesnt rate lined blocks after seeing so many fail

Thanx for your comments

I have contemplated a 205 block with stepped liners out to 94mm as I have a spare "ship anchor" I will get it machined out to accept a liner then keep going ttill it breaks through to assess the possible available casting thickness

Does your builder go out to 94mm with a 205 block ?

I also would prefer an unlinered 200 block and as you turbo boys and girls like em standard bore I was hoping for a Ł100 well worn 200 block should sort me out - lol

I know a good condition standard bore 200 block is a much sought after item

might be worth sticking a flanged liner in there, less risky than more boring for a stepped one as it's already big. just make sure its done properly

Was something I had thought about but does it look like there is enough "land" left between the bore and the jacket ?

That would have done if the long studs could be altered to suit an 8v Pinto head

I would take it to Halesowen Engines mate, they did a spot on job of my mates 200 Block, put a stepped liner in for Ł80, and it was running 400Bhp... I'm home tomorrow afternoon if you need a hand.

Great news !

A friendly local engineer has measured the remaining metal between the jackets and the bore at its thinnest point and can machine a recess into the block deck on No4 cylinder to put a flanged liner back in.

So all may not be lost yet.

You initially buy The Gimp from me

Then I buy a crank from you

You then buy my bro-in-laws 996 bike

So who's next are you gonna sell me something or have I got to sell you something this time ? - lol

... Had me worried then, I bought my 996 from a lad in Nottingham. Forgot that my mate bought Archs bike. He's still got it, great bike as well ..

I am trying to sell stuff at the moment, I have a ridiculous amount of parts cluttering up the house/garage

UPDATE

Block out and stripped

It appears there is a step in the bore but when the liner was fitted it was NOT pressed home to the step

When the liner slipped it stopped at the step

So the gap you see on my pic is the amount the engine shop (nameless at this point) did not go down to with the liner

Off to see them Monday

BUT

I did manage to get a standard bore 200 block today so in the words of Arnie - I'll be back - lol

one thing i have to ask and its a genuine question why run the bore so big ? are the gains from the few ccs really worth running a block so close to edge of the bore ?
not a dig in anyway i just cant see the gains can be worth it ?

i had a 205 at 1mm oversize in a cossie at 350 bhp and that did 20k+ abusive miles and was fine. i think the cc was 2050cc at +1.

Last time on the rollers it managed 215 bhp but to be fair that was on an old skool Sun rolling road so not really very accurate

but here is a video to let you hear how it sounds

Just had my replacement 200 block back after being chemically stripped and checked for cracks

Off now for machining to 94mm and retest to check block not porous after boring it out

West Wood Liners are not too far from me

I am going to use one of their flanged liner to repair my original 200 block

Hopefully my new 200 block will withstand the 94mm rebore without the need for any liners

I bet it doesnt.

if the liners is fitted correctly there is no need for a flanged liner especially on a nasp car

years ago i spent many days of my youth building pintos, and trrying to get them as big as possible, they end up wafer thing at much over 93.5mm in the most case, its not a case of if, more a case of when its going to fail.

A very good friend of mine ownes a machine shop, hence we know what works and what doesnt. though it usually me who takes on the r+d. hence my new engine has four liners, non stepped (though this bit is not an unknown quantity) but with a differant bore/rod ratio.

I ran my turbo 205mm block at 93.5mm for about 3 rally's and then it split (not due to the block i might add-was hydraulic'd ) with the test miles and set up miles including the stage miles it probably did about 5k miles all in all, and that was balls out every time it was used.

when we looked into the block thickness there was very little.

decided to then rebore another, was happy with it till my mistake, put the spare on the borer and went through, even though the previous block was ok.

its just luck tbh at how good the casting thickness is.

Collected block today and all appears fine after boring to 94mm

Decided to allow an experienced engine shop do the boring and the operator said that when cutting a bore and the wall goes thin the "note" of the cutter alters and he didnt hear anything to worry about whilst machining my block

Lets hope it all holds together this time

To understand the different noises when machining takes the kind of skill that only comes with experience and the guy that bored my block had a few years experience under his belt and he certainly appeared to know what he was on about

Need to dummy build the engine now to find how much to deck the block by to get pistons flush when on TDC
