Default FAO: People from Southampton, need some advice

Got a friend who is looking to move down that way.

What areas are good and what is best kept away from? Will need to be non estate and not a new build but literally anywhere from Hythe up to Eastleigh is ok as they work in Basingstoke.

Prices seem pretty cheap down there to compared to where they live at the moment in Reading.

How much would they be looking to spend?,all the nice places have bad bits aswell and what type place are they after and what things do they want and need close to them? If they need to get on the m3 easy and have £250000+ to spend it's worth looking at places like basset, romsey, north baddesley,Eastleigh, wellow, none of those places have new estates and are quiet compared to most of Southampton

Cheers

What's Bitterne, Swaythling and near the airport like. The airport been the key place but not a must. Also is Hythe pain to get from in the mornings. One of their colleagues reckons it's a 45 minute drive to B'stoke town centre.

Stay away from bitterne as it is very close to several different council estates that are not great.

I don't see why they don't just move to basingstoke as I wouldn't want to lie anywhere in soton out of choice. No disrespect to those that live there

We lived in Woolston down by the toll bridge for 7 years and we liked where we were. Since VT has gone and that whole area is being redeveloped, property prices will go up. However, getting from the centre to the M3 on a morning is a right bastard a vice versa coming home.

Would either say Hedge End or Chandlers Ford (if you can afford it) as its easy access to the motorways and both 5-10 mins from the airport.

Nothing wrong with Southampton - it's just very dull, and in that respect it's no worse than Basingstoke, The good thing about Southampton is that you do at least have the coast on your doorstep which is something you don't get with Basingstoke. Bitterne isn't all bad either; indeed, it's no closer to council estates than most other parts of Southampton. That said, I would prefer Bitterne Park over Bitterne itself.

I lived in West End for 15 years and before that Hedge End for 8 years. Both are good areas to live in, with low levels of crime and pleasant communities, and very convenient for the airport and the motorway. Swaythling is just as convenient, but less pleasant than the other two. You could also get him to look a little out of town, at places like Chandlers Ford, Bishopstoke and Fair Oak, all of which have good access. Further in, I see no problem with Bitterne myself, and if he's got a bit of money kicking around then there are some really nice, leafy places in Chilworth and Basset, again close to the motorway and airport.

Areas to stay away from for me would be Harefield, Thornhill, Townhill Park, Shirley, Lordshill, Millbrook, Weston and most parts of Sholing. Woolston is alright - one of those 'up-and-coming' areas they talk about on the property programmes - but it is pretty poorly situated for the motorway and airport.

Thanks a lot, that last thread was pretty much what I wanted to hear.
I've passed the info on so all of it was very much appreciated.

Is there like "the place to be". Like London has Kensington, Chelsea. Reading has Upper Warren, Sonning and Waltham, etc

Agree on Hedge End and West End... Lived in West End since I was born, easy to get to the motorway and whatnot... Not bad at all really.

As usual the best areas are out of town. All of the following tick the boxes in terms of properties within budget with fast motorway and airport access.
Having lived in and around these areas for 30 odd years my list of goers (in no particular order!) is;

Hedge End
FairOak
Horton Heath
Colden Common
Twyford
Otterbourne
Allbrook
Chandlersford
