engine needs to come apart to be looked at.
best way to think about it is that it will need rings. Then if it doesn't you will be pleasantly surprised.
It most likely will be rings though! Or valve guides if the smoke is blue as i suspect.
i would have helped you diagnose/get it apart if you was local, sorry mate.

white is water
blue is oil
blackis fuel
these are the colours of smoke depending on what it burns
to test the rings ask the garage if they can do a leak down test this will tell you if your oil rings are shot or not
regarding stem seals usually it smokes a lot onstart up and when they warm up the smoke either goes away or its very little as they expand when they warm up creating a seal again
also could be your water seal in your turbo leaking creating the smoke if its white or possible headgasket
check at the back of the exhaust manifold where the head meats the block to see if you can see any water dripping down the block as this is where the headgaskets start to leak
to do an exchange isnt a bad option but then neither is a freshen up on yoru engine, but with yours when you take it apart it may need other things which you carnt see like pistons, oil pump, bearings etc

Mate just rebuild your engine top to bottom, you should be able to do it for £1500 easy including new pistons and new bearings, oil pump etc. Then you will effectively have a brand new engine, and peace of mnd.... Get a decent machine shop to match the rings and pistons to the bore, and rebuild the head etc, and just bolt it together.

Sorry to sound harsh mate but your facing up to the reason why buying a cheap cossie with no mechanical knowledge and not much spare cash is not a good idea, they are only cheap for a reason!
Your best bet if you cant get anyone to help you is go for the exchange engine and get someone to fit you and fingers crossed its a good strong engine
All depends how much money you have to spend?

yeah i know mate ive read countless posts about it in the past on here ect but i didnt mind its not the money thats the factor i just thought id be able to get people local ect and mates to help but obviously not,i dont mind if it takes a year to get done as long as i get there in the end but at the minute im just not moving forward atall.
If it means parking it up for 6months and saving like mad to get it done proper it will be worth it
