Isnt rear wheel bearings a problem on these too? I had to replace mine a 24k/ 2 1/2 years old. I also had to replace the arm connecting the linkage to the box as it snapped clean in half!
Mind you 8 runs at santa pod doing full throttle gear changes didnt help much!

On a run i could get 43mpg out of mine at about 70-75mph.

Once im sorted for cash im going to get a phase one or two 172 as they are a brilliant car

The phase 1 172 is the quickest as it is a bit lighter, especially if you get one with the optional alloy bonnet.

Mine did its first track day at 104k miles.

The engines if serviced are bullet proof.

The biggest killer is tensioner/aux belt failure

No need for a check..

Start the car and listen for a whine that sounds like PAS pump or similar.

Comes from front left as you look at the engine.

If it whines its on its way. Almost like wheezzey like whine.

With the engine off you can get pop your head under the front left and see it and check for play.

The idle is around Ł50, the belt Ł20 I think and the tensioner a shit load.
