Both are really good cars. My mate has a nice 182, and even sitting in the passenger seat you can feel how well it responds and flows round the corners. I'd buy one only I hate the built quality and the off-centre pedal layout in Clios

Hmm I;m quite tempted, i'd want all the gizmos as it still needs to be the "refined" car out f the two just a bit more interesting than the alternatives for the cash...............
and I dont think I can be arsed to sort my Nova out so a 182 seems like the ideal option?

I've owned both.
I had a 54 plate 182 cup and 2 X plate 172's.
The earlier cars are lighter, some come with Alu bonnets too and have proper throttles and cables everything from Phase 2 172 on has fly by wire.
Both like to be driven hard.
I found the seats a little low in the back for me but got used to it.
They turn in amazingly but with shit tyres are rubbish...
Phs1 172 come with OZ F1's... thank you please.
Biggest problem without a shadow of a doubt is cambelt, aux belt and tensioners.
The idler diverter pully which moves the aux belt above the sub frame dont last long - need replacing every 36k miles and its not a fun job due to how tight it is.
If you dont replace it it WILL chew the aux belt which WILL take out the cam belt and scrap the engine.
182 Cups, aint really cup editions when compared with the original 172 cup- the 172 cup was the lightened no frills version with no abs while the 182 cup just had different suspension set up and spoiler/spiltter and different colour wheels.
Both were amazingly great on petrol apart from when you abused them- any abuse would result in V8 type MPG - on track my 172 did 10mpg max.
From my own experience of driving both cars very hard including track days in the 172 I would pic a 172 all day long... just seemed to be 'better' on 15inch wheels.

Chip, did you put that gazebo up yourself? If so, I would be concerned for the safety of Lee's car.
What kind of support do you have on the roof? It looks like it could snow going by that pic... what weight can the gazebo hold should this happen?

306 gti-6 is a good one to look out for too. Even the 5 door 1.4 i had many moons ago handled well once i sorted it out with lowering springs combined with koni shocks, didnt go too mad think it was -40mm all round and handled great with a bit of lift off oversteer.
So the gti-6 would be even better, really light too and about half the price of a clio 1*2

Used to have a 182 with the cup back, really good fun, I used to commute 25 miles each way, beat the $hit out of it and it still returned 29-30 MPG!!! Build quality isnt great mind.

I love my Clio 172cup.
When people say they haven't got any toys... thats a bit unfair. Hardly the most basic of cars. They still have Cd player, power steering and mine has Aircon as well (doesnt work!)
The seats in a Cup look awful but work well and are comfy.
The seats in 182 are much sexier looking.

Legend
Great little cars and clearly not as underated as I thought going by this thread! Only problem with them I've found is that the interiors tend to fall apart but I'm looking at it from a different point of view I suppose.
The 172s feel a bit quicker and personally I'd go for the Cup as there's less French electronics to go wrong. Or depending on budget the Trophys handle like rollerskates [quite a good analogy for a Clio actually, because the worse thing about having a Clio or rollerskating is telling your mum that you're gay].
The last two 172s I've had BOTH had Cruise control, Light sensitive wipers and headlights, half leather/alcantara, tints, ABS, fuel computer, CD etc. Thanksfully they were both under 30k miles. As said, I personally wouldn't want all that shit on a French car. *EDITED* apparently they're not phase 1s so ignore all of this if you haven't already.
This one went out on Monday, 23k miles, 1 owner:
This one went out about 3 months ago, think it was Renault + 1 owner and 26k miles:
I have to admit, they sell really well as long as they're low mileage. I do target these little clios to retail and there is an awful lot of high mileage, high owner shit out there.

Ive had a Ph1 172 for about 6 months now. Rear shocks are a weak point- Ideally you want uprate the shocks and springs all round(at least put on some fresh standard ones) make sure the brakes are in good working order, decent tyres all round and your good to go!!
Totally agree with what Shings said, the Aux belt is the only major pain and you really do put the engine at risk if you dont follow the service intervals.
The Ph1 172 is 1100kgs and the Cup is a flat 1000kg.

I paid £1400 for both of my 172's and for that you can throw them away if they fall apart.
£2000 seems to be about going rate for something semi decent nowadays, just be wary of idiots who want millions of pounds who are in the clio club. There are so many out there that paying mega money is just not necessary.
182's are obviously a little more expensive being later and newer.
The chances of finding one that hasn't been through a halfords shop window is slim - but luckily the owners tend to keep the standard stuff to swap it all about ok.

Sister has just sold her full fat 182. Nice car, used daily for over 12 months with no real problems. She had a BTB exhaust on it as the standard ones have a habit of rotting iirc.
IIRC One cup pack is the front splitter and rear spoiler and the other is the wheels slightly revised suspension geometry, one way of finding out if your car has this is by measuring the distance between the strut mounting holes to the hub.
If it was me i would go for a phase 1 172 as others have said.

I have only just aquirred the car as it was very cheap due to a having an engine that was turbocharged by someone who didnt know what they were doing and it throwing a rod and piston out through the block.
Just planning on how to do it but quite fancy doing a rear engined RWD YB conversion on it using some parts from the V6 clio maybe.
Chips nova has given me inspiration
I just love the rear F1 inspired bumper and twin exhausts and the colour isnt that bad..LOL
Here are some piccies.. the caravan is not mine

Are any of the "passionclio" owners attending any trackdays anytime soon as me and a mate have just bought a Williams for the track. Be brilliant to try and get a few of us together on track to compare ?

Does Chip also has a Williams lump in his valver ? If so that would be great !
Are there still places left and is it an open pit lane?
A link or website addy would be great and I'll book it up asap.

Love my track 172 - most fun you can have in a car on track - gets killed everywhere & then gets driven home!!!
Definitely watch for the cambelt, aux belt & tensioners - alot fail earlier than expected. Also gearboxes too - they have weak syncros - especially on 3rd gear! Engine mounts wear causing knocking noises. Also they have a common fault with dodgy connections on the TDC sensor.

Its also widetracked like a williams (but ive used R19 arms for a bit more camber)
Mine is probably around 2 seconds a lap quicker than a standard williams on the same tyres (888s) around combe.
Mike's 172 should be a near perfect match for yours though
