Sounds daft but it is easy to end up without any mates, either they move away, move on or you get different interests and priorities and suddenly there is noone you call a mate.

Best bet is as said, get out to a few meets etc, like minded people going for a beer and chatting about cars and shite.

Find some interests or groups that you are interested in and join up, I was in the same boat when I moved from Leeds to Barnsley, didn't know anybody but now have loads of friends here through having horses and work and that. Its easy to meet new people, you just have to put yourself out there. I know its probably not as easy for a bloke but you won't meet friends sat at home unless your neighbours are friendly
