![Question](https://passionford.com/forum/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Hi everyone,
I'm pretty new to the ford contingent, and I'm building a seven based car (GBS zero), in which Im putting the above engine, with T9 box and twin 40 dellorto carbs. Ive got the engine, it is very old with a lot of miles and hasnt been run for 4 years, but turns over fine and the inlets and exhaust port seem to hiss when you turn it over which I suppose suggests that there is at least some compression. (?)
Basically I want a solid reliable engine, that I can use on the road and maybe do the odd hill climb with. What should I be checking in the engine, what should I replace, what reasonable upgrades would you recommend to start me off, where do I start? and any particular books that you would recommend?
Any help would be great as Im sure there are a lot of people who were in my position once!
Thanks, george 7

sorry Im a bit ignorant about these things. What do you mean by n/a, and what would a cossie bottom end consist of? cost? do I need to bother with a rebore and all that? What about the head? suggestions? bearing in mind I'm on a stringent budget.
Thanks for your replies BTW

i think you are better off giving a budget and power you are aiming for, the cost can run away

The engine is completely original, so everything is looking a bit tired. Here is the ebay lisitng, I dont have any of my own photos yet, but I have stripped down the outside now.

i have no experience of the head, but i doubt you'll get much power from it, or if you can it will be alot more expensive than your budget will stretch too
sorry i cant offer much advise on that engine or the car you are trying to put it in.
maybe a zetec might be a better option as they are cheap and readily available, but i have no idea if the conversion is straigh forward
all the best; hopefully someone will be along shortly and offer some advise!

If it needs rebuilding, personally id' ditch it and get a Zetec-SE / sigma - nice and light, easy to get 150bhp out of the 1.6, rwd/kit car conversion parts readily available through e.g. Shawspeed. These engines are often available in good nick for £500 complete with gearbox, which you could sell to get back 100-150.

Rebuilding a pinto to decent spec for £1000 is doable but end results wont be worthwhile your far better off using zetec-e or sigma as said above parts readily available cheap and even in standard spec your pissing over pinto in terms of power reliability and mpg 40mpg+ on sigma!
But as with either engines fitting some carbs or throttle bodies and decent manifold will eat most of your budget so fitting standard zetec and retime the cams is best of both worlds without throwing silly money at whats ment to be an affordable kit car.
Good luck with your build
