Anyone got experience of OBD-II on an E36?
Posting here as the Innovate forum is down.
I've got an innovate LM-2 Wideband AFR meter/OBDII Scanner which i want to hook up to my 1997 e36 m3 evo.
ive bought the BMW-> OBD Adapter cable as the car doesnt have a standard OBD port, connected it up to the LM2, LM2 gets power, but then wont connect to OBDII i cant do DTCs or live sensor data
the LM2 does support ISO 9141 which i beleive is that the e36 uses, and ive tried it on both AUTOMATIC and selecting this protocol manually.
anyone got an experience of OBDII on these cars nd can point me in the right direction?
cheers
jim

i have got the adapter too jim from the round plug to a normal 16 pin. our little code reader powers up but won't connect to it. maybe you do need something else in between?

No way the adapters could work the rectangle obd2 plug in round bmw socket because the pin outs can differ across the whole range from year to year model to model and spec, the odd one may work but thats pot luck. Also 95-99 BMW diagnostic data streams is different to usual obd2 so thats another spanner in the works so any adapter even if pin outs the same still may not work there is so many variations with bmw.

I have never used that scanner before, but seems by the link that most of its features use the vehicles CaN network. this could be why it does not like your E36.
What is it you are trying to achieve. engine codes? like Posted above all OBDll use pin 7 for engine ecu this is you can buy really cheap code readers just to read engine p-codes. on Vauxhall its even been known to get engine codes out of the vehicle using a paper clip.
As for Live data with your reader I couldnt tell you but if your managed to get a conversion cable for your scanner it must be possible..
good luck

tom, as above, the LM2 supports ISA9141
twoods, do you have any more detail on the pinout differences? the one i bought was just a boggo standard "BMW-> OBD" adapter cable off ebay

Jiim you could have obd1 on 97' M3 there is 9 different version for that year alone. Also data protocol is not common to other obd1 or 2 standards therefore wont work with generic software, cables or adapters.

i beleive the 3.0 is OBD1 and the 3.2 is OBD2.
altho like you say some people say it wasnt a full OBDII implementation, the fact the EURO models are missing the sodding connector is the first big no-no... lol
bit annoying its not gonna work unless Innovate release a firmware supporting it
