My Pingtest results are good, but this must be because I'm only around 0.5 miles from the exchange.

This doesn't affect the fact that the actual bandwidth speeds are shite. Looks like we have another couple of days of downtime coming while they swap us onto ANOTHER line card that hopefully isn't oversubscribed (the last one they moved us onto was just as packed as the original one!)

the problem is your limited by your lines or over subscription.

if its your lines changing providers to another company that uses the same lines wont help....talktalk, 02 and the others.

the only way to get a guaranteed improvement is to change to a company with fibre optics, ie virgin.

I work in broadband for BT, im the guy you call when shit hits the fan.

Remember how old the lines are over the country, they werent designed for this, so the older they are or the further you are from an exchange the worse it is

I didnt read the whole 3 pages but why is that certain business can have 500mb download 200mb upload etc and most of us can NEVER even get our 6-8 mb.

Whatever the business's have the phone companys should use that in our houses so that we can get our poxy 6-8 or whatever

Im sure its not that simple though

It's down to line contention. If you pay Ł20,000 per year (not sure on the actual amounts), you can probably have a sole 100mb connection, just for you, which is what big businesses do. But because you only pay Ł20 per month or whatever, each line card is split between 20-50 users, therefore splitting down the available bandwidth. Whats starting to happen is that they are spreading themselves even more thinly now, which is why some of us are getting shit speeds.

My info above isn't accurate, just an example, by the way!

Paul, I test 2-3 times a day with the BT Speedtester and usually have to go on to do the third test, which is required if the results are under 500kbps. I'd say 80% of the tests I've done in the last 2 weeks have been under 500kbps.

I'm not at home right now, but here is a test I took a week or so ago, but all the values are the same each test, obviously the download speed varies a little, but usually anywhere from 50kbps-1300kbps (0.05-1.3 meg). IP Profile is ALWAYS 6500kbps, that never varies and if we hadn't had 4.0-6.5 meg before, then I probably wouldn't know any different!

Can see that is gotta be a equiptment issue as your hubs in sync at 7616 Kbps which is as it will show on up to 8 meg, I've seen this once before on a job but no idea how it got resolved,
at least it's not a line length issue!!.. Lol

Can't be a issue with set up as would not be in sync at 7616 Kbps

I'm currently connected in the test-port, with a new microfilter and nothing else (other than the main phone) connected.

BT Openreach have done their tests on each of their visits now and connected using their equipment, with the same shit results. So much so, even they are saying it's not down to our equipment. It is congestion and oversubscription.

I'd agree with that. If you have noise on the line, thats GOT to be the starting point.

With ours, our line quality from a voice perspective is excellent. I can't fault it.

the local connection server is less than a 2 minute walk from my house, and thats all im getting on option 3 as well.... someones getting a bloody phonecall!

christian, whats the option 3 package meant to offer you, we have that as well but ive been very dissapointed in our service recently.... some days we have noise on the line, others we dont.

what causes that to happen ie: the noise on the line? interferance through the network, changes going on, people working on the line etc?

Fella, if I could get 4.5 meg, I'd be happy with that. I'm getting 10% of what you're getting. We are supposedly on 'up to 8 meg', but even in the realms of being reasonable, 0.5 meg isn't acceptable. All I want is circa 3 meg so we can stream stuff like I-Player.

I don't want to sound like an arse, but if you call them up to complain about 4.5 meg, you'll not get anywhere.

its the upload speed i was going to complain about mate, im very happy with the download speed, its click and then 2 secs later full page loaded, i cant fault them about that..... is the upload speed meant to be that low?

also i'll need to ask them about the noise on the line too now and then, its not constant but it does appear at a seeminly regular basis these days

p.s. i have no fookin idea about computers and their workings other than how to type and do the basics, internal stuff and their workings........i'd be better off trying for a porn star before attempting to learn that stuff!

Why do you need upload speed though? Seriously, the noise on the line is a separate issue, for BT themselves, not anything to do with Broadband.

Even when my download speed was 6.0 meg, I've always had 0.38 upstream.

Ive been with bt for years, more of a comfort thing now, they managed to fuck my net up a few sundays ago, i had been using it fine on saturday night then 8 hours later it was fucked, sent me a new hub still nothing, this went on for 2 fucking weeks without broadband and the fuckers still charge me silly ammounts for a shitty service. Need to change over soon.

Have you checked what speeds your neighbours are getting ? IF its congestion and oversubcription, they will all have the same problem.

To me it sounds more likely to be an issue with the box at the end of the street or the exchange.

Your ping would be massive if it was overcontention.

My old dear had the same problem for months. Turned out to be a problem with the telephone box thing (those green boxes at the side of the road) about half a mile away!!!

I live on a road of mainly older folk. I have to say though, there are many line cards in each exchange, so its possible for one or more cards to be overcontended, whilst others are within tolerance. This is why they are changing us over, but hopefully this time, they'll look at the capacity on the destination card before they make the change.
