sod buying the games as you can download them for free.
you can get something like this...

and upload all your games to it - you will then have loads oof games on one cartridge.
I have used the R4 card before and it seems they have sorted their previous bug with SDHC sticks using the SDHC cards. Make sure you get the R4i card and not the regular one and get the 4gb version. I have the games and files you need for this.
There is also another card (which I mainly use but cannot remember as i have leant my DS out to my mate and havent seen it for almost 6 months
) Can have a look at home if you want to use this one - which in my opinion is better than the R4. Again i have all the files and most of the games you need for this

Ran is right, the R4 cards will save you a bucket load of cash in the long run but if it's a B'day present or something along those lines I think it's nice to actually buy the proper thing.
Asides from that the pokemon game comes with a "pokewalker" which is a step counter and can also be used to aquire items and pokeman you wouldn't usually encounter during the game.

I've got 2 R4 adapters and 4 4gb cards and over 200 games on my pc for the DS so don't need one.
Saved me a bucket!!
