Default Little black box on top of Gear box

Morning all,

I have a 1999 1.8d escort van. I changed the Gbox oil in it yesterday but only managed to get approx 2 litre in through the filler/top up hole.(Hayne and owners manual recommend approx 3 litres??)

I looked through the top of the engine bay and on top of the gearbox there is a little black box. When i took the lid off i saw a round whole. I put the engine oil dipstick in there and it went in approx 3 inches before i hit something.

Can i top up the gearbox fluid through this hole?

how much oil were you able to drain out??? because if it takes 3 ltrs and you only drained out 2 then you have 3 lts in there now!!!

Well i managed to drain approx 2 litre and i managed to get in approx 2 litres before it started to come back out the fill hole. i filled it through the prober fill plug not the black box. i am only going to top it up very slightly trough the black box but its handy to know its thre as it will save me jacking up the car etc in future.

that black box is not a fill hole its a breather

you fill to where you said you have done it until it comes out then its at the correct amount

you will not get all the gearbox oil out unless the box is off and and tip it up

if you fill into that hle you will over fill the gearbox and it will spit out everywhere

the gears dont need to be fully emerged in oil, there like a crank where the bottom of the gears sit in oil and when turn pik the oil up to lubricate the rest of the box
