Mk4 escort temp guage

Hey, my mk4 escort isn't Reading the temperature very well. Is the sender on the front of the block next to the exhast manifold? Also is it responsible for triggering the fan?

yeah on cylinder head near manifold but fan switch is sepearte, on the thermostat housing iirc

So even if the guage isn't working the fan will still work when the water reaches 80 something deg?
