Default Does anyone know....?

if when an employer blocks websites from being used on the work pc's does it tell you they are blocked?

We have struggled to get onto facebook, and youtube also today.

It doesn't come up sayin they are filtered or blocked, just will not load them!?

Is this them blocking them, or is it just a problem with getting on the site!?

Can anyone tell me....please!

could be that they're being blocked.. all depends on how your employer has set things up.
IME from an IT perspective you'd normally still allow access but just log everything prior to enforcing a block, and once the block is enforced the user (i.e. you!) would receive a message stating that the site was blocked and why.

Mine blocks hotmail and stuff like that and YouTube. Usually comes up with a message too. The web in general at work is now extremely slow and I think they are doing a lot more monitoring of it than they used to.

if you can't google it, the sites may be being blocked by picking up on keywords in the url.
e.g. - facebook is blocked here during most of the working day, but if you want to read a news article about facebook with the word "facebook" in the url it will also be blocked.

xrdodgybird - if it's done properly with an appropriately specced appliance (i.e. monitoring device) then any slowness should not be noticable to the human eye as it should be measured in milliseconds. IF the appliance also does page caching, as is often the case, then you should find general browsing is actually faster.

PS - as far as accessing blocked sites goes, there are usually several ways around it but I would generally not recommend using them in a working environment unless your HR/IT Acceptable use policy is extremely lax, plus unless you know the setup there's always a chance that it will stil be monitored.
I'm in the middle of a project at work to do exactly this by decrypting and analysing any encrypted netwrok traffic that previously would have bypassed our proxy servers. Initially there won't be any blocking or messages but there are likely to be some very irate managers in the imminent future.

well someone will know.
imo it's a bit pointless blocking stuff and not informing people that it's blocked/why it's blocked.. or they'll just spend more time messing baout trrying to get onto the banned sites!

If you ping the IP you can usually type that in and get on it through that. I used to do this in college. Obviously at a risk though, so you know...
