Insurance con!
My mate has just passed his test and to congratulate him, his parents bought him a car. They wanted a relatively modern one, with a small engine, so they got him an early Smart car.
He has had his liscence for about 8 months and the cheapest quote he can get (going on his parents insurance)...

£1350 isn't that bad in this day and age. however it's completely pointless paying out that for a policy in his parents name as if the insurance get even the slightest hint he's the main driver it'll be void in the event of a claim and any future insurance will be even dearer!
they'd be better off buying him a cheaper car and sticking him a grand towards the insurance.

But why would it be so high, it's not even a 1 litre and they're cheap to repair.
Probably a good thing he got a car before me, as I had my heart set on one when I'm 17/18, I love the way it looks

he might be able to get it a little cheaper if he puts it in his name with a parent as a named driver, did that with my 1st policy all them years ago had my dad as a named driver and it knocked quite a bit off. even now with a license for 10 years, no points and 8 years ncb it's still cheaper if i put my mrs on the policy at statisticly women are safer drivers.

Mate I'm not being funny but that is a decent quote for a new driver. My bro is paying £2.2k on a 2004 Fez 1.4. Even if you try and insure a £100 1.0 banger it still doesn't make much difference. Insurance are the biggest rip off merchants on the planet.

1) How can you show off in a Smart that handles like a shopping trolley and has a top speed (when new) of 90.
2) Old people are more dangerous drivers and have more accidents, according to a study published in the papers a while ago

fair point about the showing off etc, but 2 things

2)maby so but old people tend to drive slower and only damage there own car, 17-25 yo tend to drive faster and damage more cars, more cars damaged means they have to pay out more money

2) Agreed, but old people don't generally go above 40mph in any situation.
Don't have the main driver (young lad) as a named driver though, as I'm sure others have pointed out, it basically means he won't be insured at all.

If it is an early smart it will be left hand drive and insurers tend not to like that.
If it is a little later and one of the first right hand drive cars, it's just down to his age and lack of experience.
Even a smart will do some damage hitting something/someone at 60mph, especially if that is a Ferrari or a queue of people waiting for a bus, and that is the risk that the insurer has to cover.

But it sounds like they should be able to trade out of this.

£1350 thats cheap,
My bro is 18
Passed his test in November.
Any car you like Fiesta, Clio, Corsa etc etc 1.0 or 1.1 or 1.2 depending on year and spec etc.
Any year from 80 for a fiesta to say 2003
TPFT £2800 with low mileage etc
With my mom as named driver £2500
My mom as main person and bro named £1800.
I've told him to keep the £2k for a car and £2.5k for the insurance and wait till he's 19 and buy a new car on the never never with free insurance.

Insurance is a right rip. But unfortunately he is best taking the pain now and building his no claims, else he is always going to encounter shitty quotes, no matter how old he is/how long he's had his license.

there are some early corsas i think that are the lowest insurance braket there is just get one of those for about £800 and insure it third party prob be £1000.

Agree. Having previously worked in insurance it is the case that it is the third party risk, ie the cost of smashing up other peoples stuff that young drivers do that knocks up the cost. If he hit a people carrier up the arse in traffic and all seven occupants got whiplash at 2k a pop thats 14k before they pay out for the material damage of the vehicles. Add on lost earnings, courtesy car and administration and thats a big risk to insure. Young drivers through a lack of experience will not anticipate changes in the flow of traffic etc. The ultimate top speed is irrelevant in a 40 mph zone in heavy traffic. I paid £740 for a Nova 1.2 Merit + tpft in 2000.

insurance on fhte feista was £600
put the wifes name on to it (she'd just passed her test) and it went down to £470
the mondeo was around £400 with business use, to remove the business use it was £600
my 3 door cost me £60 a month to insure when i was 19
i don't know how insurance companies work either

you have to over 21 for most i think, but then its not reliable, unless you can fix cars and dont mind that part of it
1350 is a bargin for a lad, most lafds are looking at 1800 these days for a standard car, and well into 2k with a few mods

Scroungers and fake claimers are ripping us off, not the insurance companies.
