Default US Holiday Visas?

Hi all,

I'm looking to go on holiday for 3 weeks in the States during July - can anyone tell me how far in advance I need to apply for a Visa please?

Cheers,

Agar

You don't need a visa if you have a machine readable passport. All you have to do is fill out a traveller API (Advance Passenger Information) with the airline (basically, your details, where you'll be staying for at least the first night, and why you're going) and also, an ESTA form, as posted above...

Thanks for the replies folks

What do you mean by machine readable passport exactly? My one has a biometric chip if thats what you mean, but my girlfriends one doesn't - will she have any problems with hers?

Just as above fill in online and then the card on board and jope they let you in

Went last october to vegas and was pretty hassle free bar filling the green card out on the plane half pissed.

Unless you have a criminal conviction you dont need a visa, just fill out that online form and the green card on the plane and your sorted.

I got of lucky haha though he did also ask purpose of visit but still better lol. I hate customs always on edge. Probably because of my many bad experiences with French customs

I always get the questions of where you staying, how long, why etc. So I just print a page off with the dates with my flight dates, address of where I'm staying, phone numbers etc and hand it to the guy. The bit I don't like is the electronic finger printing, which always getsmore involved everytime I go. I always feel on edge in customs and immigration (probably cos the got real guns lol) and them I get sweaty palms, so the machine won't read them, the the guy's all " why have you got sweaty palms? Why are you nervous?" like I'm hiding something

The yanks can and will detain you and put you on the next plane home if you don't have the right papers.

I don't know if they expect the airline to ask/know about convictions, but the US authorities will certainly fine your airline for allowing you to board if you don't have the right passport and API and they may then refuse to carry you in the future.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it but that's a call for you to make because I don't know how their immigration people would find out about a UK conviction in the first place.
