Default Problem with PC....

Any help appreciated.

I had a virus on it a couple of days ago. It was XP malware , that kept coming up that I should buy it lol. Malware bytes seems to have removed it but when I go to open word or msn messenger etc, i double click, but it comes up with 'what program would you like to open this with'...? Or use the net....

It's like everything has been deleted but the icons are there I that makes sense.

Any ideas please? I'm happy to format it and start again but don't know how

sounds like the removal of the malware has removed your office associations.
the icons are blank because the PC doesn't know what to use to open the file.

basically if they're shortcuts you're trying to run then try the below

>-----Original Message-----
>From a command prompt;
>assoc .lnk
>should return with
>..lnk=lnkfile
>If not
>assoc .lnk=lnkfile

if they're shortcuts to the docs etc then you might need to reassociate the file type with the correct program.
what happens if you create a new shortcut to word or msn?

Alright mate, I think I got the same virus the other day. All I did was to run a system restore to a few days before I got it and that got rid of it. You can get a free virus scanner from avast which I'd recommend doing after you have cleared it off in case theres any others lingering. When I first tried to do teh system restore it kept closing it everytime I opened it, I got round this by clicking on the system restore function as soon as windows was starting up which seemed to work,
