Default labour cost to skim a flywheel???

Just checking to see if i am getting quoted a fair deal to have my flywheel skimmed, they reckon £100+vat. Is that excessive? Its a billet flywheel if that makes a difference.

cheers

Thats all we used to charge at my old place, was £28 an hour labour at the time £50/100 is just robbery tbh its 1 of the most simple things you can do on a lathe

that was going through a subaru tuner called greenwood racing developments in surrey and i think the machine shop they use is local to them.

do you think i should offer to get it skimmed myself which might risk the warrentee they offer?

bensham engineering are about 2 minutes from my house so is a good option lol.

Skimmed a Subaru Flywheel a few years back, iirc there are 6 6mm dowel's which had to be taken out. Skimmed it of 3 small passes of around 0.6mm all in. Took all of 20mins for the whole job.

Ur best bet is to ring bensham then and ask how much they would charge to skim it, then ring the other place back and ask exactly what their planning on doing/what ur getting for £100 plus vat and give benshams quote (which i doubt will be anywhere near that!!)

They cant really dick u about with the warrenty if their not doing the work themselves anyway, sounds like they've added their cut ontop if their getting somwhere else to machine it

The only thing that would have cost more when i had mine done was if i couldnt get hold of any replacement dowls and they had to machine me some new ones as their obviously small and theres 3, other than that its an easy job!

My last one was lightened from 8.9 to 6.6KG, skimmed and rebalanced for £30.
£100 is a piss take.

ii'll probably take your advice and ring bensham, i think with the saving i'll make its more then worth my while...sounds like i could save £70!

well tbh if u give the place doing the work a quote from somewhere else they should in theory match the price, or by the sound of it stop taking the piss and charge u what it is actually costing not what their bunging ontop lol.

Are they doing more work aswell as the flywheel or just getting it skimmed for u?!

Supply and fit Helix organic clutch, fluid change aswell mate. I was gonna get the clutch else where but they brought there price down and almost matched it all by 25 quid so i thought i'd go with thats incase they blame the clutch i supplied if anything failed.

Their bumping the extra £25 back in the labour for the skim. Get the flywheel off them and get your local one to do it, tell them you want the same finish as on the outer of the flywheel.

well if their fitting the clutch for u anyway then if possible get them to do all of it but obviously get another quote first and then ask them why their charging u so much for a skim and see what they say!!

Asked for quote on a Zetec flywheel skim at a local engineering company and was quoted £15 which I thought was good so had my spare done as well and paid £25 for both.

£100 + vat is taking the piss.

On a job like this my place only charges a straight labour rate, of £20 HR, took 1 1/2 hrs all in, I think it's well cheap, but I have put thousands thier way over the years!!
Man has been doing this stuff for 54 years, got engine dynos road dynos and a mass of machinary, bursting at the seams his building.
