Hi there. I just bought a set of coolant hoses for my Escort RST, very cheap off a chap selling me his exhaust. I didn't notice at the time, but one of the hoses has a little damaged on the surface. The top layer of silicone has split, exposing some of the white chord stuff underneath. The rest of the layers are fine. Will this be ok to use on my car do people think? I know with a tyre they say this is very bad, but I'm thinking the worst that will happen is I loose my coolant..!?! Opinions?
i wouldnt risk it, chances are it would be ok, but if it goes and you end up with a knackered head gasket, warped head etc. it makes it a very expensive set of hoses.
Should be fine - wrap some self-amalgamating tape round it for protection. Depending on the specific hose there's either another layer of silicone under the webbing/mesh, or another entire ply

Yeah looking at the end of the hose, it looks like there is 2 layers of BLUE silicone layering with webbing, and then a top layer of RED silicone which is what is damaged. It still looks red through the damaged section, so there is plenty of BLUE silicone I think to protect it...
id change the hose tbh spec if u are runnig alot of power
I'm not... The new hose is Ł135 and I paid a tenner, so it's not Ł20 saving really... Gonna ask a mechanic at Torque of the Devil what they think to be safe though.
