Brian,
I have panels blasted before came out really well. I've also used sand blasting when i was restoring my Mk1 Mex which came out quite well as well. But to be honest there are better things out there now.
Check out these.

or this sounds really really good not as agressive as shot blasting.

yes mate same with any bare metal, the sooner u get a coat of etch/primer on the the better!! more exposure to the air = more chance of rust coming back quickly.

I have used surface processing to strip 2 doors and an engine grill and they were very good. The engine grill was alloy and they had to strip that separate, it cost me Ł50.00 just for this part.

I had to have the whole car repainted as the job the 1st body did shop was very poor

There are some fibreglass parts the new paint guy wanted blasting so i thought i would get the alloy engine grill blasted at the same time.
Called Sutton soda blast 5 times and got no answer! Tried a few days and finally got though to him but his attitude on the phone was not good. So i ended up going to Roy at soda blast UK.

I took the 2 fibreglass parts and the alloy grill to him, to cut a long story short he could not blast the fibreglass without damaging them but blasted the alloy engine grill. He said it took him 3 hrs and charged me Ł170 !!!

My point is, soda blasting is easier on the metal work than normal grit blasting but it takes a lot longer to do so is a lot more expensive.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info mate

I have spoken to my mate who is going to be doing the welding and pianting and he said about just getting the underside blasted and maybe the inside but thats it, said it will be loads easier to weld after its been blasted as all the metal will be nice and clean

Thanks for all replys

You need to get the media/sand out of everywhere as wet sand is even worse in chasis rails etc than just water as it stays damp forever!
