Default Almost lost my boy this week :(

My little boy Joseph, 7 weeks old hasnot really been a well baby since birth, but its been put down to colic, which we too thought it was as Esmay had it when she was born and it was similar, but infacol etc would not work with him.
Anyways. Sunday dinnertime he was looking a little off, and had a temp. We were at mum n dads, in the conservatory, so we took him home but he was making litle groaning noises. Again we were thinking colic, but Lindsay checked his temp as his head was feeling hot. He was 38degrees! We gave him some calpol even though you should not till 8 weeks, it ws only one week and they give it them earlier in hospital. Then we called NHS helpline. Told us to go to night GP at hospital. He said it was a viurul infection(which we thought too as we had all had the cold) and to not give him calpol, just sponge him down.
Lindsay was up with him all night, trying to cool him down. Morning came, his temp was 39 degrees, and his arms and legs were grey! We took him to A&E where they took blood samples, and gave him 3 big syringe boosters to get his blood circulating properly again! Plus paracetamol for his temp.
Hes been on intraveinous antibiotics since, and yesterday they got his blood culutres back and they had grown a bacteria called intrococcuss or something. He was looking much better so antibiotics were working so we though great hes on the mend. They have now put him on even stronger antibiotics, and has to stay on them till into next week!!!!! Th doctor has explained this infection, and its only since that explantion that we have realised how serious it is - he said its a really nasty one, and we were close to losing him....got him there in just about the right time! Thats come as a shock today, i wasnt expecting that.

Theyre not sure how hes got it, and he has to have a kidney and bowl scan tomorrow to try and find out. It grows in the intestine etc, so looks like thats what his stomach probs could have been, not colic Poor little bugger

Could have lost my boy

Sorry to hear that mate. I know how you feel,my youngest had what the medical profession describe as a "choking episode" at the age of 8 weeks . Basically he brought up some milk which he then inhaled. Waiting for the ambulance to arrive whilst i held him as he was going blue was the most frightening thing I,ve ever experienced. He,s a normal 4 year old but i cant stress enough how i admire the medical proffesion after that day !!I hope all goes well for you and your family.

That must have been horrific mate! It was bad enough when Esmay went through a stage of what they call 'kinking' or 'breath holding', where if she was upset she would cry out, but then the next breathe in and that was it, she wouldnt breath again! , used to turn blue and just be frozen looking at you....very scary first time she did it! Had to throw water on her to break her out of it!

So to go through what you did! Christ! ......

Agreed, you feel like you are being paranoid, but circumstances like this proves to say bugger it, and get them checked out! By a proper doc though not a night GP who is past retirement

bless him! My son (who's now nearly 14) when he was 6 weeks old started to projectile vomit after every feed and i mean projectile!! Took him to hospital and it took them a week to diagnose he had pyloric stenosis whit is a stomach problem which he had to have an operation for! Most worrying time! My daughter touch wood has been OK.

Hope the little fella gets well soon Lee!
