Default Focus Engine swap

Hi All, I'm new to this site just hoping to get a bit of advice. I have a Mk 1 2001 Ford Focus 1600 zetec, the engine has gone and I need to replace it. What i'm looking to find out is can a puma 1600 zetec engine be fitted? Is there anything I would need to check or ensure the new engine has before buying it.

Would the engine be a straight swap, Does the ECU have to go with the engine or could the original ECU be used.

Thanks in advance.

Ryan.

IIRC the mounts are different in a Focus vs. a Puma/Fiesta.

ECU depends - is your Focus engine a black-top 'SE' or a metal-cam covered 'S'? If you change between the two you will need the new engine's ECU and loom. This is because the SE uses a combined air temp and MAP sensor in the plenum near the throttle body; whereas the S uses a MAF. If you change ECU, you will also need to change the GEM or CSM (depending on what's in your focus - unfortunately 2001 was the year everything changed so there's no way of telling without looking!) and the immobiliser chips in your keys.

OK cheers for that. So guessing it would easier just doing a straight swap for another focus engine? It's a blacktop SE engine in my focus and the puma I was looking at. Would the same apply for the ECU etc if I was swapping from a focus of same spec?

Cheers

Only straightforward if you have a facelift foci - otherwise the whole loom needs changing out to accomodate the GEM that the ST170 ECU expects to see.

Webster - if it's a black top then it'll drop+plug straight in.
