it is a 1/4,you need to say it as what is a 1/2 of a 1/2 which is a 1/4,
to work it out you times the top number together 1x1 which is 1 and 2x2 which is 4 so 1/4

yes that is what the calculator said but why should it start as a 1/2 & end up a 1/4 your multiplying it not dividing it so should not get smaller

think about it logically, a 1x1=1, 1x0.5=0.5, therefore 0.5x0.5=0.25

only if you are starting with a whole number.

another way to think about it, 0.5 or a half, is 50% of 1,
50% of 50% is 25%

0.5 is exactly the same as 0.50, 0.500, 0.5000, 0.50000 and any other way you wish to write it

The . is the decimal point and when people say "to two decimal places" or "three decimal places" refers to how many numbers you quote after the decimal point.

what is 10x1/2 or put it another way 10 halves i think you will find its 5 as 10 halfs =5,
you are not dealing with whole numbers but fractions of numbers so it decreases

if you you divide a number by a number less than one it increases the origional number, if you multiply a number by a number less than 1 it goes down.

so 1 * 0.5 = 0.5 which is same as 1 * 1/2 = 1/2

0.5 x 0.5 = 0.25 which is same as 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4

Andy, i'll try and make this fun for you

Pour yourself a pint of cider and drink half.

Your pint of cider was 1.0 pint, you've now drunk half so you now have 0.5 of a pint.

To make that back up to a whole pint you will need twice what you currently have in there. i.e 0.5 x 2 = 1.0

If you take another gulp and only have a quarter of a pint, 0.25, so you would need 4 times as much to get back up to a full pint... 0.25 x 4 = 1.0

So if we think of it as you having 4 glasses all with a quarter of a pint in, you'd need to pour them all into one.

If you give yourself a top up back to half a pint, 0.5 if you multiplied it with another half pint 0.5 you'd have 1 full pint, but you'd need to put it into 4 glasses... So 1 pint divided by 4 glasses would mean a quarter of a pint in each which is 0.25

Keep pouring yourself a pint until it sinks in
