Default Showers and Combi Boilers......

So, whats the best type of shower to have with a Combi Boiler??

We have seen lots of designs we like, but know that some aren't compatible with Combi's, we just dont know which.

Combi boilers can run a normal "Theremostatic" shower if you want it to, ie Hot and cold water feeds to it. BUT as you may be aware Combi boilers dont have the best hot water flow rate

You could have it Pumped which would get rid of the low pressure problem but at a price.

The other option is a Mains feed electric shower, which if you buy a top brand one you will be more than happy with as the power of them is painful at times

Good brands for both showers are Mira and triton

As tiff says Christian, we run our shower off a 100,000 btu boiler and its a good hot powerfull shower....till our lass turns the tap on downstairs then it slows and runs cool. Should have had it pumped but as we hardly use the shower i didnt bother IMO go electric

only problem with the electric type showers is the level that your tank is if youre on non combi.

i dont get the best pressure out of mine cos it doesnt have enough height.

how much are combi boilers and fitting? as id like one in my house as ive only got a little old baxi normal one and would be good to get rid of the water tank and things.

M brian your electric shower isnt run from the tank, its run from the cold feed which is pressurised locally.

our worcster 28cdi is more than ample for our thermostatic mixer

as tiff will tell u the problem is with combi boilers its not the heating btu but its the dwh (domestic hot water) flow and the cheaper boiler the wanker the dwh flow is if anyone local needs a boiler i will be happy to price one up @ less than trade as i work @ plumb centre

Kev

All depends on the "head" of water you have.

That is from the top of the shower head when it is at its highest position, to the bottom of the water tank in the roof that feeds it.

Melv
The higher the drop, the more pressure if you are using a gravity system

You'll get the best performance from a mixer valve, electric showers aren't worth a wank. As Tiff said, Mira are good but you end up paying over the odds for the name. At work we deal with a company called A. J Gummers and all of their shower valves eclipse Mira's spec on every level for a lot less money, you also get a longer and more comprehensive guarantee.
We've got a fully thermostatic valve in the january sales for Ł65

best shower for combi boilers are pressure balanceing ones like the mira 415 that will work best, most combi boilers will only run one hot tap / outlet at a time but with this shower if someone opens a tap the temp will stay the same but the flow and pressure will reduce untill the other tap is closed. You will not get any electric shower evern close to the temp and flow rate of these.

Thanks everyone for your help.

What we are planning to do, is fit a Quadrant Enclosure (Probably 900mm or bigger) in the corner. We then want a *BLING* Shower with as little on show as possible. So probably a Controller and a Shower Head mounted on the wall.

We saw some 'Hudson Reed' Showers today that look just what we want. Just need to check that they are good/suitable. This isnt necessarily the exact one we want, but something like it.

Christian

That shower would have to be pumped mate as it uses 3/4" feeds.

What combi have you got and what flow rate the DHW (domestic hot water)???

I will have to have a look on the Boiler. It is a 'Vaillant' one, but thats about all I know.

How can I find the DHW flow?

We will probably change the Boiler for a more powerful one if we have to.

I think that would be an idea mate

Usally get the DHW flow rate in the user handbook

if it a vaillant the flow rate whould be 9.5 lts per minute for the 824 / or 10.5 for the 828 these are the two most popular, you can not put a pump on a combi shower, does not matter what size the conections are on the shower, you will need 15mm hot and cold supplies then just increase at the shower valve

So, knowing that I have a Combi Boiler (OK, so I aren't entirely sure of its spec at the moment), how would the system in the link above work? It is described as a Complete Shower Pack, but there isnt alot of info.

All I can see in the pic is a Shower Head and Control Panel. Does it have a Hot and Cold Feed? Is there some kind of Pump? Can a system like this run with some kind of Independant heater/pump thing in the loft?

yes that would be fine with your boiler, the only thing they ask for is a pressure reducing valve if your mains is over 5 bar. the shower is just a valve and head, no pump ect as i said befor you can not pump with a combi

Thanks Steviep for the brochures.

Now we are looking at boilers, what is a good rate of DHW, adequate to provide an excellent performing Shower?? 16 Litres per min?
