If i planted Laurels in the ground but still in their pots - say a size pot of a football, would they live ok but just have their growth suppressed, or would they eventually get too big for the pot, get pot bound and die?

the laurels will be restricted in the pots and impede growth for a while until the roots split the pot. they may need watering in the hot dry weather.
why not just plant them in the ground and cut them back when they get to the size you want? if they get to big they can take being chopped right back and will shoot again unlike conifers

The above is correct and they will look sick i.e yellowish leaves due to lack of nutrients unless you fed them regular. They will take ages to break out of pots.

Why do you want to plant them in pots? Too lazy to prune them lol.

Either plant them in ground as they should be and prune or plant something more suitable.

I live on a permanent open plan estate, which i hate(not the estate lol its nice, the open plan). Not allowed walls, fences or hedges. You are allowed however shrubs etc, Barratts did plant loads but we ripped them out as they were vile.
I though if i planted Laurels which i like in a kinda hedge way, just to define the property, yet it wont be a hedge so to speak as theyre just shrubs! I thought restricting their growth somehow might keep them looking more shrubbery, rather than trimming them back, as that surely would make them look like a hedge!

Any other suggestions?
