Default Snapped cambelt, M reg punto, bent valves??

Hi lads i bought a punto 3 months ago to drive about in whilst my RST is being restored,
well last night whilst leaving asda the car died, i tried to restart it but it sounded like it had no compression, so whipped the cambelt cover aside and its snapped,

NOW: i have been told 1.1 puntos rarely bend valves? is this true~?
if so i can hopefully bang a belt on and plod on again

Change the waterpump too while you're at it - they like to go at around the same age as the cambelt. Cheap and easy fix.

Lol with the waterpump takin me the most of ten minutes to change a month ago, and not caring about the motor as its just a banger, i put the old belt back on as it didnt have ANY cracks etc in it, oh well.....lesson learnt

A little tip for you next time. If you suspect a Cambelt has snapped on a car, then instead of whipping of the Cambelt cover, just take off the oil filler cap, and get someone to crank over the Engine. Providing the Camshafts etc are visible, then they should spin as the Engine turns over.

Not really. The Valves would already be bent out of the way IF it did already bend them, so you would not be causing anymore damage that it already has.

Agreed, but while there is still a chance of it doing more damage I wouldn't risk it.

I can see where your coming from, and ofcourse, you shouldn't sit there cranking the Engine over and over if you suspect the Cambelt is snapped. Just a quick "blip" of the Starter motor would do it.

useless tip for this engine as there is a steel plate under the cam cover youll see nowt.

i work on these all the time ive been a tech at a fiat garage for ten years never had a fire engine bend valves when cambelt snapped.head gaskets last five minutes though.

Did I say you was? I said if the Camshafts ARE visible, then you could do it. I wasn't just applying my post to Puntos. But nevermind, your a fiat tech eh? Wow. I better ask you next time then!
