Too many posts.. I need a life!!
Probably the 1st serious post I have contributed to this site.
Remember that if you buy a watch with a mechanical movement it will need to be serviced every 3 years or so, more often if you wear it in a dusty, damp or warm and dry environment. Depending on where you take it to be overhauled, this can be expensive, whereas if you buy a battery powered item, a battery change every year or so is the most it is going to cost. Some very decent looking battery watches are available nowadays. It depends what you want/can afford. Like they say........you pays your money and makes your choice.......................................

if you can afford a rolex or planet chrono i,m sure a service ain't expensive for the owner and its not only a service,i.e 5 years for submariners etc...,it also includes polishing and believe me my seamaster came back like new!!!

If the watch is water resistant/proof to so many Atmospheres how on earth is any dust going to get in it ?
and What do they do on a service ?
Call me a peasant as my Gucci was only Ł600 an nowhere in the same league as you boys, but every 18 months to 2 years it goes back to Gucci to have a new battery fitted and every time, like a fool I pay Ł40 for a Ł1 battery so I guess you get screwed which ever way you go.
Fakes are the future, especially the really good ones like Porkie just bought Dave.
Spend Ł200 and replace it for another at the first sign of trouble.

Sorry Dave, it was just a reference picture so you can check if the Porkchop has bought you a fake or not
And Stu...
I'd love to take a sauna with you, thank you for the offer but one phrase I dont want to hear coming out of the steam is 'Got the time on ya cock ?'

IIRC a battery for a Breitling is Ł100 but that includes the watch being sent to them, a clean and the seals all being done correctly. You don't want to feck around with a watch that is waterproof to around a mile deep.
Mine had a full service and two buttons replaced last year and it cost me Ł400. Alot of money when you think what other watches you can buy for that money. However, I wouldn't change it and if you look at what they do then you will see its probably worth the money it costs. The watch essentially comes back like new.
I did have the hump for a while about the Ł50 per button I was charged as I think for a watch of that value they would have some pride in their product and replace it for free. Its never even seen water let alone been diving with me yet.

I know exactly where you are coming from, I've had nothing but bad experiences with Gucci, Raymond Weil & Tag.
Gucci, the gold round the bezel was wearing off after 4 years, two Raymond Weils have had problems, one the casing got scratched when the battery was changed and the other wasnt running when we got it home from the shop and the Tags rubber strap snapped.
Not what you'd expect from 'prestige' watches really.
As for being water tight to 1 mile, I've been on some pretty epic muff-dives in my time, but never to that depth

I have had my seamaster for about 5 years and no servicing, It still keeps the same time as when new, I wear it everyday and TBH it still looks mint, I have/had a "cheep" Ł500 and the knocks and marks show on that after only a couple of years so I personally thing it actually works out cheaper in the long run.
Fuck spending all that wedge for a quartz version

Does seem a shame when you pay that much more for a quality item Leaves a bitter taste to have to pay for your expensive broken item to be fixed through no fault of your own.
As for the 1 mile thing, I'm married so I lost all enthusiam to go muff diving years ago. As for being water resistant to one mile I am only certified to go to about 100ft anyhow. I would be long dead before the watch stopped! Makes for pub talk though.

Its horses for courses really. We all like to spend silly amounts on our toys but just divert it to different things I suppose.
If you want a watch that looks nice and tells the time then go for the fake and take it off when you want a bath, or if you regularly need to swim a mile deep or indulge in a sauna or two with Stu then pay the extra 3 grand
Mines got different chrono faces to both those 2 above, so maybe its actually the real one and those poor old sweat shop workers put it in the wrong box by mistake, and Daves ended up with the one I should have, as apparently they are all made in the same factory in deepest China anyway.
Right Im off to pick up some more scrap washing machines in my flat bed tranny now

I had mine for 7 years and it wouldnt keep the time properly, ended up sending it away for a new clasp, service, pins in bracelet, new hands and new HEV............
Bargain price of Ł500! But it'll carry on for another 7 years!

It is easier to make a waterproof case than an airtight case.
In a service, the movement would stripped down, the mainspring/or springs would be taken out of their barrels, cleaned, lightly greased and re-inserted back into their barrels. all brass and metal parts would be put into an ultrasonic tank and cleaned for say 10 minutes, dryed off, the movement re-assembled and all pivots (bearing surfaces) oiled with proper watch oil, which is very thin and doesnt corrode. The escapement (the part which makes the ticking noise) would be set correctly for optium running, and this would be oiled too. The movement would then be tested for a few days to check its going rate, put back into its case and given back to the customer.
I hope this helps.

I love watches but never worn one. I ought to actually, so many times i carry my relativly bulky phone around with me (nokia 6300) just for the time.
I only like a few however, and have some concerns :
Without being racist, because of the colour of the whole watch i have a feeling it would only look good on dark skin ? I have light skin.
And i WANT this eventually,
The white is a Chanel J12 Mens / Unisex Ł3.5k min
The other one is a Breitling SuperOcean Heritage Ł2.5k
I have Ł1400 but i ought to reinvest it really. Been having good fortune with a spread betting FX system and can afford about Ł20 per point now Just really risky for a uni student with debt and no job!

no mate, you're full of shit! You were "outed" on OCUK for talking a load of bollocks about how you were going to get a range rover sport or something stupid, then spammed the forum with terrible pics of a ropey pASSHAT, before putting both feet in your mouth by saying you had got then given away a dog within a fortnight as it wouldn't behave itself!

I was "outed" on ocuk because im not in the bmw driving tongue up arse clique that seems to like to "run" the forum.
I gave that dog away as it was the best situation FOR the dog, and i took it back to its breeders minus Ł300.
Get your facts right you silly cunt.

Ok, there is actually no such thing as a 100% airtight watch. Unless they are welded up! There will always be some atmosphere able to get in. When the watch is warm everything expands, everything, then when it cools down, the air, or atmosphere cools with it and tries to act like a "sucker" and pulls a tiny and minute amount of outside air inside the case which contains the movement.
