Average Speed Cameras
Was driving home this morning from London along the A13 and noticed that they have put average speed cameras up between Barking and Dagenham but there are signs on them saying "average speed camera under test" does this mean they ant actually working yet so you carnt get done

EDIT: Found this - "A Guide to Type-Approval Procedures for Automatic Distance/Time Speedmeters used for Road Traffic Law Enforcement in Great Britain by Dr SR Lewis states: "6.1.3 When image detectors are used, both shall be positioned to use the same angle of view to the same registration plate of vehicles passing the measurement datum points."
So unless the procedure for granting Type Approval has changed, swapping lanes will prevent you from getting a ticket.
However - Most Specs cameras are around roadworks, and they're there for a reason, i.e. there are blokes on the carriageway! So driving above the limit and swerving about probably isn't the wisest of ideas!

i think the changing lanes thing used to eb the case but dunno if it still is.
I remember a press release from a senior police officer asking people not to change lanes when they were on a stretch of road monitored by average speed cameras.
dammit - beat me to it!

I've no idea if it's changed, but when they were first released they only had Type Approval for speed monitoring in one lane. So if you entered in lane 1, and left the zone in lane 2 or 3 the camera would have recorded your speed but you could not legally be 'done' for it.

I am probably one of the few idiots who sits bang on 50 at roadworks, even when there are no camera's there and get overtaken by everyone else out of respect for the road workers
then its back to regaining my position at the front of the pack once out of the roadworks
then its back to regaining my position at the front of the pack once out of the roadworks
The reason no one respects the 50 limit is 99% of the time there are miles after miles of roadworks, with no cunt working on them and no evidence if Work happening, so people get pissed off and just ignore the limit....
I have no problem with roadworks, cones and cameras when there's actually some road work going on and hard working chaps putting in some graft to improve the carriageway, but when it's 15 miles of cones and not one body working there, it's a tad annoying.

it's cos "most" of the work is done during the night......but at the end of the day how fookin hard is it just to 50mph for a few mile.......i put the lines down when the roads have been finished and trust me most of u would SHIT urselves at the situations we have to put up with with the "british public" FLYING/CRASHING by us...........

i use to do 90's on a private road on the way home from work through them and switching lanes worked, (no road works, just money traps) just unsure if its still the same?

They havent been there a long time, I couple of months now. But there is a certain stretch of the A13 that seems to be plastered with them. Between Barking and Dangenham. Some are about 50 feet between each other. I hate them yellow things.

There is only one flaw in the changing lanes theory.
Say there are 5 cameras in a "system", and they don't have to be linked sequentially so, if you go through camera 1 in lane one, then switch to lane two for camera 2, and back into lane three for camera 3, what's to say that they don't have 1 and 3 paired to work out the average speed over the distance between these two cameras?

According to this type-approval info posted above, there would be nothing to stop this. The cameras are monitoring the same lane all the time, but camera 2 in my example could be a dummy camera, or 2 and 5 could be monitoring the second lane while 1 and 3 are focused on lane one.

ibet they can, its risky.
if there is a stretch with 10 cameras, and only 3 lanes, you cant dodge them all, so id imagen they can still time you over the distance in any lane, even if it was on camera 1 and 10...
the m6 is full of the cunting things, adds at least 1 hour to my trip home to devon every weekend, and i havent seen ONE person working on them yet...i travel mostly at night aswell

I very much doubt they'd set them up to cheat the system. With the freedom of information act you could find out and the camera partnership would get hammered.
I don't trust them either, and to be honest just sit at 50 and wait it out rather than risk it.

Same here mate!
Nice one mate, glad to see there is some respectful motorists out there.
I for one work for the free recovery side of roadworks so am on call and able to recover anyone that breaks down during my section of motorway due to no hard shoulder. I do have to sometimes dodge people travelling at 50+ that are too busy looking at what im doing rather than watching where theyre going.....
If anyone wants to, I can take any one of you out with me to do a job during the night, be a good experience for you I think!!
More like they slap the cones up to have an excuse to slap the cameras up.

A few years ago at work we were working and developed an ANPR system to sell as a car park entry system.
It worked by an infra red camera searching for the white rectangle of the plate, then simply compares the plate reading to a database, if your reg was in database then the barrier opened
I assume that the cameras on the motorway and the ones the police use for that matter use the same or very similar technology so imo i cant see how changing lanes would make any difference??
i think your more likely to get away with it with dirty plates, non road legal plates or the system simply getting 8's and B's or 5's and S's etc mixed up??
If i remember correctly the system also had trouble with square plates but im sure they would have a way around that now??

also they do not work for motorbikes so is there not some thing to argue in court..some thing to do with human rights how a motorbike get away with it and not u/me in our cars mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm think about it.also in bedfordshire they have introduced two may cameras on those speed vans you see at the side of the road..
