Sky HD rocks!
After my sky plus box died last week i decided to get HD. I'd never been arsed with it before and didn't think i'd notice that much of a difference
Anyway it came on thu and i'm chuffed to fuck I only recently saw it for the first time at a mates house but to have it now and play with the channels to see the difference it's amazing
I keep flicking between the normal and then hd versions to see the difference.
It's annoying paying ANOTHER £10 to sky but seems good so far

We've just had ours fitted today. Got one of the new Amstrad DRX890 boxes, 500GB.
The picture is ace, but man alive, the sound!! Anyone that has HD without proper surround sound is missing out. Only annoying thing at the moment is the known bug where the volume of SD broadcasts is MUCH lower than HD ones, so if you switch from an SD channel to an HD one, it almost blows the speakers off the wall if you forget to turn the volume down first!!

Have you set the volume to max on the sky box settings?
HD picture quality kicks arse.. Plus the movies and most HD content is broadcast in 5.1 sound
Winter olympics in BBC HD is looking good..

That's strange... I use an av receiver and don't get that issue. The only channel that is a little louder than the others is MTV HD..

We generally view with the volume set to around 50 on the Onkyo amp and this is the case with an HD channel now, but if you switch to an SD channel, the volume needs to be raised to 65-70 to match the HD level. You can imagine what happens if you set the volume to 70ish, then without thinking select an HD channel.

Cheers Chop I was always doing that when I first got the box now the first thing I check is what's on the HD channels.. Then look at sd ones.. Don't forget to add itv HD
what did sky recommend Christian, if anything. To be honest I don't have it up that loud but wouldn't say te volume between between sd and HD is vastly different.. Amp is usually on 15 for volume...

Has anyone noticed the price of HDMI cables !!
I have seen them from about £15 to £120
Pitty the fools who buy the more expensive ones.
Apparently the more expensive ones give you a better signal....
... Its digital, It either works or it doesnt without degradation...LOL

Champions league on ITV HD is superb.....
Volume is ok for me running through an Amp.........
You will find yourself watching things you never did before.....one of the best ones i watched on Anytime was a program about demolishing the hotels in Vega's....then building new ones.....Was Superb in HD
Plus you MUST watch all the nature programmes.......AWESOME!!!!!!
Lets just hope that BBC put the F1 on BBC HD this season....

Those that say the sound is OK, have any of you got the DRX890 box? It's the only one with the problem as far as I'm aware.
I know that sources vary in volume level, but the SD volume is about HALF the HD volume. As I said, Sky are aware of the problem with that box and are re-writing the software to suit.
Also, LOL about the cables. My HDMI cable for the Blu-Ray player was about £6.00. We used the one that came with the Sky HD box. The sound is connected to Digital co-ax, using the old (albeit high quality) Phono lead that I bought for the old Sky box, but split in half. Apparently, an experiment was done and they were able to transmit Dolby 5.1 sound down a coat-hanger.
So, again, Digital co-ax is the way forward and spend fuck all on a cable, you can even use a normal TV aerial cable for 50p.
It's only when long lengths are involved that slightly better cables may be remotely beneficial.

When they first started banging on about HD I thought it's a load of hype and my TV is fine thankyou....However when I got a big plasma I realised what it's all about and I love it. I wish there were more HD channels for the money though because I don't watch the sports or movies but because it's connected via the HDMI the picture quality is much better

Yep, I have two of them now. Previously had a thompson that died. That one was very good.
Agree sound is low on the new ones. HD picture is excellent though
Previous larger sized amstrad boxes are notoriously shit though, so avoid

Agreed, but it'll come soon.
The difference is amazing, especially on a TV 50" +
Flicking between the football in HD and standard definition, the difference is amazing.
Also, take a look a channels like BBC HD just when they're showing the previews. They'll show clips of nature programs and stuff, where you've got forests and rippling water. The picture is unreal.

Lots of good choice on the HD channels for the planner...
Swords: Life on the line - Discovery channel HD
Heroes - BBC HD
Lost - Sky1 HD
True Blood - FX HD
Ice Road Truckers - History HD
Megastructers - Discovery HD
24 - Sky1 HD
Just a few of mine on the planner at the moment

No, its a known issue. It's being widely discussed on AV Forums and I've just spoken to Sky, who know about it.

I have an onkyo reciever and christ i cant have mine set over 55 without the house starting to rattle, so how the hell you can turn yours up to 70 is beyond me.
