Have you really got Ł20k to through at a Cabby?? coz a PROPER, reliable genuine 400bhp one is going to cost AT LEAST cost that I reckon. If you STILL wanna do that I suggest you see a drugs counsellor!

stu serious mate i spent 7k on my cabrios engine and that wasnt complete either
rememeber that ya are best using a new group A fuel pump, all the pipes, i/c other sundries ect, thats alot to do, then all ya gonna get is a car that cant handle the power and shake all over the placem not to mention the chassis twisting and keep popping open the roofs handles ( my efo cabrio does that already
i think 3 grand and get ya self a 280bhp 16v cabrio , more than enough power and ya never gonna go over 150 in a cabrio anyway, thats stupid as ya roll that ya will em more than dead !!!!

I don't hate the wheelspin... I think all 4 wheels spinning when it comes on boost hard in 2nd is pretty fucking cool actually!

big difference between the 280 and the 350-400.
im very tempted to zetec turbo my old xr2 when i eventually get round to doing it.
im going to go to town on the preparation of the car, and do it along the same lines as graham (zetecinside) fiesta in terms of quality.
i have a niceish daily driver now, and a mk2 zvh turbo for having fun in.
there is no way on earth that I could afford to do a sierra or something else as a track car to the quality I want to do so can kind of see where your coming from.
But difference is.. im doing mine as a track car that i'll run on the road and ive got other cars that are decent until ive done my other one.
your building a cabrio - so its never going to be a track car and 350-400bhp in a FWD as a road car is way OTT.
if a turbo'd cabby is what you want etc, then do it sensibly and think of what budget your going to be shelling out. id go for the focus central rods and pistons (Ł600ish iirc), standard head and cam. decent turbo on it (say t34 (Ł700)) then FRST management (or possibly SECS if you want custom when that comes out) CTS box with ATB diff (Ł1k) youre probably talking about 5k - which onyl just really gets you into cossies/sxs etc and isnt that bad value for money and you can sell the bits after.... if youre talking the best of everything then triple the price and you wont see any return!!
ps - whats the fastest FWD you have driven or been in out of interest?

rwd is bad idea IMHO and it will again massively increase the price.
if youre cutting it all up underneath to put RWD in then you better be damn sure its all properly done and designed right with a cabrio!! or it be a new rare bananna edition!
have a look at all the threads etc... what people do with tuning cars that were never meant for it... build it... have it for 3 weeks, lose interest cos its not really what they thought it would be.... sell it... cant sell it... so break it....
we like fords here... they arent the best make in the world - 90% of us know this....
but they are great fun to tune modify etc with real world money.... if you start to think anything more than this your going to run into problems

The plan was to go for 200-250 first and just slowly build it up from there. So if I really didn't like it, I could put a normal 2.0 in there and sell it but keep the engine for something that would be better.
If I was starting to get serious problems with traction that nothing could sove, then transplant the engine into a specificly modified car to cope with that power. (Mid engined RWD Fiesta or summink)

give us a spec list and estimated prices
whats fastest FWD youve driven? and driven hard?
fastest ive driven is my 170ish bhp mk2 fiesta.. but its well disspointing as an overally performance package to be honest and needs alot of work to get it anywhere near properly being able to handle it. i was actually quicker in most places in my 125bhp 16v mk3.
straight line acceleration is all well and good but you run out of road far to quickly so need a good all round package.
arias pistons which will be a good bet are about Ł600-Ł700 for the set I think
then youre talking another Ł700 for rods say.
are you intending to build it all yourself and hope it stays together with 350bhp?
or get a tuner built engine??
I guess as your asking what to get its going to be mainly DIY'd?

Unless you are someone like Brom or martin who are very capable engineers mechanics and welders then you have to pay someone to do most of the work. Then these mad (and sad) projects are time consuming, a waste of money and the end result is normally a shonky unreliable shed that you have huge trouble selling...
so you have a semi decent shell? so you have a mondeo block? YOU NEEED LOTS MORE BITS THAT COST LOTS OF MONEY!!!!!!
I am going to be REALLY harsh now... And I apologise. BUT here we go..
People get pleasure from cars in different ways. Here are four common ones.
1. Driving them (me and most normal people!)
2. Building them (buftys and talented engineers or DIYers or Masochists)
3. Breaking them and ebaying the bits for money (spadge etc..)
4. Dreaming about cars that will never happen or exist
Can you see which one you are? Its pretty easy and I suggest you move onto no.1.... its more expensive but more fun!

Mad Mac, why not go for just 250bhp, this will be cheap compared to 350bhp on your car. The way i see it is you have to pay:
Engine Parts Ł2000 easily
Gearbox from Bernie Ł900 (iirc)
Intercooler from Ł265-Ł470
Clutch Ł300
ECU Stuff from Ł700-Ł1500
Mapping from Ł500
Turbo from Ł400-Ł1000 depending on spec
Front and rear strut braces Ł200
Wheels and Tyres, gonna need some proper ones Ł400 easily for tyres, wheels Łxx
Brakes, Ł300 easily
Thats Ł8220 if you allow Ł650 for say alloys. (mo`s from martin) and doesnt include a penny of labour except for the mapping.
I know what your saying to be different etc.. We have a proper 2 seater convertible here and its brilliant in the summer etc.. but the rest of the year round its freezing and the misses has even taken my rs to work on a few occassions cause its to cold and some bastard has taken our focus!

Mr Mac - listen to what the people are saying.
I did what you're proposing to do with a Mk6 Escort, by spending all this money on it, and it still wasn't remotely fast.
Just before I laid out 5k on turboing the car, Mike R showed me the error of my ways (and not like that ) by telling me to get a proper car in the first place.
Unfortunately, the old adage is always true - you can't polish a turd.
350bhp through the front wheels of a convertable Escort is going to be awful to drive, slow, expensive, and a complete waste of money.
Think carefully before you spend all that money.

Engine Parts Ł2000 easily,,,, bit ott there for 250bhp, recon a grand will do it tbh
Gearbox from Bernie Ł900 (iirc) ,,,,,,yeah no getting aways from that, ya dont need a quaife diff though , knock 425 off that bill
Intercooler from Ł265-Ł470,,,,, or 300 from switch
Clutch Ł300 cant deny that, its needed
ECU Stuff from Ł700-Ł1500 ,,,, nope frst management is very good if the guy using it knows what hes doing, thats gonna be about 200 quid
Mapping from Ł500 yeah thats gonna be 500 as the guy HAS to know what hes doing
Turbo from Ł400-Ł1000 depending on spec again a t34 will cost 650 quid and then 90 quid for a down pipe and mods
Front and rear strut braces Ł200 cabrios dont need a rear strut brace as the rear shelf is the strength for the roof aswell as the floor has bars going along the bottom of it too
Wheels and Tyres, gonna need some proper ones Ł400 easily for tyres,
again f1 eagles are good BUT there are cheeper out there
wheels Ł standard for wheels from a breakers imo
Brakes, Ł300 easily again big brakes are very very nice and stuff BUT are not always needed unless ya drive like a fooker all the time, 2wd discs and brakets will be ok as people have used em for years !!!!!

think i made the bill lower a bit BUT
its still toooooo much money for a shonky old cabrio unless like me ya love em , oh and they didnt how even mention the roof that ya gonna need ( as they always do ), bushes, suspention, battery ( yes they get old too) the varios sundries that ya gonna need aswell, i would budget for a extra 1500 quid for them bits and what ya got
more that what tonyk posted
see for me its not too bad, i got the brakes, suspention, zorst , car already fitted with kits ect, all i need is a engine , that would cost me about 1500 quid tops and i got a sorted cabrio
just i cant warant the money on a car that my family can use
good luck

I agree with what people are saying. I wouldnt go for 350 no way. If thats what ya really want then do it, but i thing youll regret it.
Im just going for 200 bhp in mine, anymore would be a waste of time, if i want more ill chop it in for a 3 door., Unless you want to break records, then youll need more than what youre aiming for, and if you dont want to break records then why do u want that power??? Cos it will be wank.

All stu originally asked for was "what pistons and rods to use" i'd be pretty miffed if all the "helpful" replies on what to use were
"why the hell are you bothering with a cabrio"
Its his choice, ok, they dont handle, and there Fwd, but why does that matter its his choice at the end of the day
Ok, 350bhp is a bit OTT, but he doesn't deserve caning for asking

he had the advice early in the thread... and then it went from that to... are those then good enough to be able to withstand the power of god?
its a friendly board this, people just looking out for the guy before he does something he may regret.
have a look at paul r times in his fiesta turbo to get the idea of how effective a relatively simple lowish spec zetec conversion can be

Talking from experience here dude, dont waste your time and money on a shonky old escort cab.
I've learnt the hard way after spendin two years and mucho ŁŁŁŁ's tryin to make an escort cabriolet summat it aint! The only thing it ever did was look nice, but it was like that when I bought it! Loads of different efforts on zetec turbo engines and they were all crap!
That car virtually ruined me, I was skint for a long time and it nearly split me and the missus up not to mention countless arguments with my folks over it and goin without other things in life and most of the time left without transport because the fuckin thing was allways in the garage.
I eventually come to my senses after being dissapointed for the final time and fooked the peice of money pit wank off and got myself my first sensible car, allbeit only an st24 but its a hell of a lot of car for the money and never lets me down or bleeds me dry.
I decided to give these zetec turbo's another go, but this time in a track car that dont matter if it takes ages and built by someone who knows their shit, not like that fookin cock end BSW bloke.
Dont do it mate you'll regret it in the long run. I'd never have anythin like that again as a road car, even with all the expensive brakes , management, suspension etc.... it was still wank.
If you want a fast car buy one in the first place.

Yeah its true... unfortunately myself and lee are mates gotta admit thou from the first day I knew him he was saying the same thing.
Get a 200sx, dont waste your money on a car with no potential.
And yes you have tried
But unfortunately, I can't drive like lee either, all I can do is drive in a straight line fast, cabbies dont corner, yes, and fwd dosent have any traction, but it would be interesting going for it. and the only time a 300+bhp cabby will shine is when it gets traction.
Just the way I feel, so what if my project car is a ford cabby, not going to have it forever....
