Default Pulling a car trailer with a POST 1997 Licence

I passed my test in 2003, so I believe I cannot tow a car on a trailer (I am aware I can tow a trailer, but the combined weight of car and trailer exceeds the allowance)

What I am needing to know is what do I need to do to be able to legally do this? I should assume I will need to do a test, but am unsure as to what is required.

Can anyone please advise me?

Regards,

Rob

i got really pissed off with this as there doesnt ever seem to be a definitive answer, so i contacted the dvla and the police, and got an answer stating u dont need the B+E if...

the weight of the trailer/caravan is less than the weight of the towing vehicle, and the combined weight of the towing vehicle and the trailer/caravan does not exceed 3500kg

I thought that the max tow weight was around 1000kg.

I'll be towing a Mk5 Fiesta with no interior or engine with a Mk1 Focus.

So dependant on the weight of the trailer, will dictate the weight of the overall towing mass.

well my vectra weights something like 1250kg, and we worked out i could tow my escort weighin just under 1000kg on a 250kg trailer, meaning the total trailer weight didnt exceed the weight of the car, and just within the total allowed weight

i think they are going to be clarifying the law a lot better soon, as the trailer/caravan industry will get hit very hard when this generation do not buy anything to tow due to confusion
