It's probably my favourite car "out of the box" in the whole world, but is it really one to buy to use every day?

I know you could use it everyday quite easily, buuuuuuut........ Someone must know what I mean.

For that money a couple of years ago i would choose an f355 but lately ive become a bit of a snob for modern cars! Have any of you sat inside a 996? Dated is not the word! I think for that price range i would prob be in a b7 rs4 cab

Ideal for those ring trips he mentioned, and the economy that he said does come into it too.

Or were you just answering a different question?

Practically slick tyres and a carboard boot floor......not ideal for family trips to the ring heavily loaded

They dont need to have the cup tyres on them we have one that comes in here with 90k on the clock with normal m3 tyres guy uses it everyday. Boot floors arent as flimsy as you might think either..

See more grey than carbon black about here i would love a black one

Not exactly hard to change the tyres or put a sheet of ally in the boot if you are bothered, but its far more than just a piece of cardboard in there anyway!

He only mentioned ring trips, and trips abroad with the mrs.

doesnt sound quite as heavily loaded as you appear to be thinking.

The fact he is mentioning things like a 996 turbo, kind of rules out him taking a sofa with him when he goes anyway surely?

30k is a lot to sink into a car... why not spunk half that on an extremely clean E39 M5, you seemed to be a massive fan of your last one so why not return to what you know made you happy.

Cheers,

Not sure where a sofa was mentioned? If so he'll be much better off with the RS6

What were you actually thinking would fit in a 996 turbo but not an M3 CSL then?

mercs am ok till they go wrong, and it will, gears boxs and abs units, balljoints

bmw,not so bad to run,and cheap ish to mantain,

vx8,when it breaks cheaper to but a new one

porsches,rads,turbos,tyres

if it was me

bmw csl, ap's on the front, bilsteins all round

every ones a winner

What about a CS?

Some of the extra good bits of the CSL carried over into an "everyday" M3. Would get you plenty of change and still a bit more exclusive.

Potential depreciation would be the only thing that'd scare me off. Certainly won't hold its value like a CSL will, but should hold it better than other M3s

I'd discounted it TBH as soon as he said trips abroad with the missis, as anyone with a wife/significant female other knows that would be physically impossible to go on trip in Porsche 911 that required more than 1 overnight stay........, and dont they have a child unless i'm mistaken? Which would rule out anything but short family trips

Anyway, as much as you're bleating on trying to trip me up for some bizarre reason, I merely said my personal choice if I was spending my cash wouldnt be the M3 CSL for the reasons mentioned, as much as I love them and would have one in a heartbeat for a weekend car. Each to their own and all that

Also the alcantara trim in them looks properly nasty when it gets worn, which it seems to quite easily from the ones i've been in IMO and I couldnt stand having a really lovely car with an interior that was looking a bit shabby

Out of all the choices mentioned i'd go for the Audi or the M6 if I could afford to run them, if trips abroad and holidays werent mentioned then 911, no competition

why not a M6 over an M5?

to 99% of birds... an M5 is EXACTLY the same car as a 518d... eg its a up market Taxi or repmobile for area managers...

why not choose same car..... but in a sexier outfit?

Who cares about that though?

Anyone who does buy a car for such purposes may just as well buy a basic E46 Convertible and spend the change on WKD and Rohypnol or whatever.

Have you ever had a proper poke around a 911?
There is loads of room for packing clothes etc.

Porkie speaks sense, M6 would be a great choice, M5 does look like any M Tec kitted diesel unless you know what your looking at or its on full tilt.

GTR After reading Porkies Q&A's in Redline about his I think I'd steer well clear unless I had deep pockets.

VXR-8, FAST but as someone else said mentally expensive on repairs, I knew someone who got a crash damaged one and the wing was something like £1200 !! ouch

CSL or M6 although CSL has the M5 problem of just looking like a slightly kitted up diesel although we all know its much more than that, brakes are poor so expect to cough up £1500 the moment you buy one !

I do agree with whats been said about spending that sort of money on a car, you compared a new Focus RS to whatever you may buy but you are forgetting you are comparing a car that IS 30k new to a car that was double if not more than that new so you have to expect the running costs and repairs to be a LOT more, plus FRS is new, so proper warranty which you won't get on a used car, well not without paying for it !

and a very low percentage of M5 owners, who like the idea of supercar-esque performance in a discreet package.

Thus meaning the Petrolheads to Tossers ratio of M5 owners is vastly more favourable.
