Lunatic sport in the first place, but it does look like it could have been turned from a fatality into just a very nasty accident if they had some form of netting up.

that's a fantastic ammount of speed to be crashing at

and to think, most of us don't think twice about creeping up to 90 mph or so on the motorways and think it's perfectly safe

Really sad that someone is dead, but is that really a sport?

And never mind nets, what they need is fully enclosed tubes like the flumes in the Barclaycard advert!

Jesus christ, I don' think you would of wanted to live through that anyway.

Even a simple net would of helped a lot, no doubt he would of been injured but he really never stood a chance taking a hit to the head like that.

Ditto on the ping, thats nasty

Good old media to say what an absolute tragedy it is, then slap close up photographs of the dying/dead person because that all anyone wants to see really.

Aye well maybe they should put some on turn 13 as well ..

But ... At the end of the day, They should get on with it TBH .. Danger in all sports and this one seems statistically safe compaired to most.

Also its noted that an Olyimpic games is credited by the amount of Countrys and people competing, Some experts say this guy shouldnt have been allowed on the run .. He didnt make it to the world championships in 09.

CheeRS ross for the link that work's
Aye ne bother ... Probably what the 2010 event will be remembered for now .. And the opening ceremony ..

A perspex roof would kill the competitiveness, imagine losing control? If the worst that was going to happen to you is that you'll do a couple of loop de loops everybody would be doing it.

Nets and foam padding are the way forward IMO.

RIP, must be horrible for his family and friends, I'd rather not watch the footage if I knew him or was related to him.

At the very least he died doing something he was obviously passionate about.

Very nasty and the noise making contact with the post is quite stomach turning

Why is there not polycarbonate sheets on sections like that?

The wall was raised today along with a reprofile of the ice. The men are now starting from the Women's start line to limit top speed. Netting is not the solution, netting snaps your neck.

The events have been delayed by a day.

I've just been reading on skynews that apparently it's his fault for coming out of the bend at the wrong angle and not correcting it. Well why have they altered the course today, and they had a complaint yesterday before the accident by a female luger who said it was dangerous. Maybe he did take the corner at the wrong angle and that caused the accident, I'm no luge expert, but being a very fast corner, shurely they should have has safety measures in place, the girders he hit didn't even have padding on them.

He was ranked 44th. He's not a top competitor.

This is a serious, advanced level course. As discussed many times over, many people here are out of their league and need to be careful. This is not the movie "Cool Runnings".

Let's stick you in a McLaren and see how you do in Eau Rouge flat out. For anyone to think this is not a sport you need to give your head a shake.

FYI - padding doesn't do shit when you go 144 to zero in 12 inches of padding.

Well if thats the case, why let a a guy who is ranked 44th in the world on a course he cant handle. i couldnt careless what his ranking is, if they let him on the course in the first place, there liable, thats the top and bottom of it. its not some adrenalin junkie base jumping putting his life in his own hands, its the olympic games, rules, regulations, health and safety, simple. yes sport can be dangerous, and accidents happen, but when your talking about proffesional sporting events, and a very dangerous sport in luge, ALL safety aspects should havebeen covered, as can be seen in the video, its a fast corner, the banking/wall is very low, and there isnt any kind of safety equipment. them changing the banking/wall today proves it wasnt suitable in the first place.

Yeah I can go for that.

Fiddy: The games are credited on how many people compete. So they welcome allot more than say the WC or European championship.
