my 51 plate escort van speedo has issues....... Pottering round town its fine, but if i go to 50 it starts jumping around 10mph then drops down 10mph etc. after that it is always 7mph out when under 50mph till its been sat a few hours.

If it's a cable driven speedo, which I don't think it will be, need to look at the speedo drive cog and cable for slippage/wear.
If electric make sure all connections nice and clean esp earths ones, no joy then new/sh one needed.

tabby, was going out earlier so couldnt get too dirty but had a spare minute, wiggled the wire (it is electric) and unplugged and plugged back in and its proper fucked now, bout 20mph out lol. is it worth putting some de greaser in plug the blow out and spray some wd40 in ?? what best way to clean?? will take off box and clean there to iff its possible

The mere fact that is has altered shows it most likely to be the problem, sometimes the chip inside the tacho can go tits up, it's the AC-DC convertor, converts AC from the sensor into a analogue signal for gauge, which just measure voltage pulses to give average, just happens to have a speed gauge face instead of volt gauge.
I would get some proper contact cleaner, but failing that spray with vinegar swill around connector a minute or two, then wash out with wd40 etc.
I use DEOXIT D100L, and DEOXIT GOLD(PRO GOLD), but seriously expensive, seriously good mind, you only need one drop to do the job, good job at Ł25 for a 2ml tube!!
