Default Engine number and log book info needed

I got another Escort GTI some time ago and then engine went in it so i took it out to get it reconditioned but found out the engine was replaced at some point and has a different engine number to whats on the log book.

Should i call the dealer from where i got the car from and tell him he sold me a car with a different engine number to the log book or shall i tell the DVLA?

Or just record the new number at DVLA and get on with the rest of your life?
