Default Need a quick reply (Car on ebay).

A friend of mine wants a Frontera, he's thinking of buying this as it's cheap but with a couple of problems. The auction ends in an hour but I'm only here for the next 30 mins, so a quick reply is needed if possible.

It quite clearly staes that it starts but blows water, can anybody confirm if this is a head gasket issue or would something else cause this?

Could be head gasket, could be leaking hose, cracked head or a cracked block. Id keep well clear.

As above, he wants to do abit of off-roading it it and it's relatively small for a 4x4.

He didn't get it in the end, won the auction for Ł170ish but it didn't meet the reserve price, bloke wants Ł400!

The 2.2 in the frontera is a long stroke, tall block ecotec engine with a belt. The 2.2 with a chain is a completely different engine, never fitted to a frontera.......

I dont think i have ever seen a frontera on any of our local off road days.
sure i heard that even with a lift kit they just cant get the ground clearance or articulation that other "better known" offroaders get .

the front axles tend to fail at extreme angles when given a bit of stick and the front end lacks the required articulation and ground clearance due to the IFS layout. Depends what youre doing, for rock crawling no, for a bit of greelaning, scatters etc they wouldnt be bad.

He wants Ł400 for a Frontera with a knackered engine??? It's probably only worth that with a mint engine!

The recent snow falls have pushed the price up for some reason, ebay prices for 96-98 models average around Ł600 of which none of them are in top condition.

I can't talk him out of it, I've tried many a time. He wants one to offroad, bash into things etc and not worry about the cosmetics, I firmly believe he's going to ram somebody off the road in it if any road rage occurs. Should be a cheap laugh for him and a free laugh for me, lol.

Also not true, its a very good engine with huge tuning potential. The early ones had chain issues which were mainly repaired by vauxhall. A few failed prematurely. Id happily buy one now tbh.
