Default Anyone with a MK3 Golf VR6?

Considering one of these, and there seem to be quite a few bargains with sub 100,000 miles on the clock. Anyone ever owned one? What are they like to drive? Is handling terrible? Any common problems to look out for? Both engine and otherwise.

Cheers!

do a search mate, this has been covered loads of times!

handling isn't bad really, best thing i did on mine was a set of dunlops and replaced the back axle bushes. transformed handling.

I ran one of these for a couple of years a few years back, doing nearly 30k was a great car, only went wrong once when thermostat housing failed, common problem though,
Bought it standard and put a few nice performance upgrades, was rubbish handling standard though, put coilovers on it and new bushes totally transformed the handling,
was an awesome sounding car with a ramair filter on it though,
if you can put up with the fuel consumption go for it, heres a few pics of my old one

In other news- I used to own one.

Highmiles show on the highlines due to leather interior.
Usual 90's Build Quality from VW which was good.
Low teen MPG thrashed and low 20's MPG at the best when not thrashed.
Engine BOMB proof if looked after - VW mechanic say good for 250k no probs- thrashing from cold kills them.
Pre 96 cars didn't come with galvanised doors and boot panels so suffer with rust...

Handling wise I found it a bit front heavy (obviously) and if I am honest not that quick... but the noise is enough to not be bothered.

Good looking car and for the money you can buy them for a good choice, just steer clear of the tatty ones.

mine:

bad on fuel? mine was worse with a k&n but driving sensibly will see 30mpg on a trip

high teens low twentys everywhere else though. mines on 80k and i've done 20k in it over the last three years. replaced, rear shocks, axle bushes, plugs, leads, coilpack, oil temp sensor, thermostat housing and both water pumps. which sounds excessive but it a 15 year old car. other hot hatches of the time, cavvy sri, rs2000, rs1800 have all rusted away a long time ago.

check electrics all work, windows and sun roof problems can become expensive.

my insurance is about £350 tpft i'm 22

great car, very reliable sounds awesome... BUT dont handle for shit and power is a let down for the 2.8.... sold mine after getting fed up of putting fuel in maybe twice a week and getting depressed with the lack of performance and handling...

but asides from that was a great car to drive and never missed a beat

disagree! it was only fairly recently that i scrapped my £500 chavalier v6.. and that was onyl cos i couldn't get a wheel off after a flat tyre!
had a lovely sound to it, all the toys inc remote start, heated leather seats, lowered suspension, jetex (i think) exhaust, better brakes etc too.
had it 2 and a half years and mercilessly caned it everywhere i took it and it was still going strong!

the only problems ive found with them are the suspention top mounts, and anti roll bar droplinks which dont last that long, but with a set of half decent coilover and pollys all round and it drives like a go-kart

Golf's aren't imune to rust either, when I hunted our GTi out I viewed 7 or 8 cars before settling on a good one. One looked mint but when I climbed underneath found holes through to the carpet.

They handle well if you do it properly. People just slam them on coilovers and thats it and wonder why they dont handle well. Proper koni dampers and springs, fast road geometry setup, camber adjustment due to lowering, and they drive lovely.

If you can stretch your budget a little look at getting a Corrado VR6.

Looks so much nicer, far better interior, faster, more power, is definitely a future classic, handles far better and you will never ever get tired of watching the spoiler move up and down.

I really miss mine.

got 3mates that own vr6's. one is in a mk2 shell and is the 2.9 great cat and never had problems. the other 2 are in mk3's and not to bad, one is charged and sounds awesome with good power, the other seems bad on handling, not very quick pick up etc, could just be me expecting more from the 2.8. good looking cars and sound of there own!

I had one 'back in the day' and I fucking hated it!

The most depressing interior out of any car I've ever been in, not nearly as quick as you hoped and as far as the noise goes...well...it may have sounded good but it's all show and no go.

Noseheavy as well btw. so didn't handle.

That is all.

Well I was reading this thread last week along the same time I was considering buying one. The car in question is an l plate that has done 145 k but had a complete rebuild 2 yrs ago so it's all good. If you were to here it then u would believe it. Sounds brand new and not a tap to be heard. Anyway it's got unamed coilovers on it but has came with a second set like brand new but also not sure on make either. It has updated roll bars front and rear. 6 branch manifold, sports cat, full stainless and superchiped. Also tidy 17s with excellent tyre. Mot till Jan next year. No tax. £1000 I paid. What do you's think.

they are nice cars but fuel economy of my mates is almost as bad as my impreza,,,,, and for the great fucking noise it makes giving in beans,,,,,,you cant help wondering if your always driving the car up steep hills

BUT ive been out in a supercharged one,,,,,,, TOTALLY DIFFERENT,,,, sounds a million times better with the extra mad max whine and fuck me doe it make it nippy too,,,,, never had to put fuel in but i cant imagine that would have improved at any point pmsl

This one seems excellent on fuel. About the same as the wifes old 1.6 mk4 astra
