basically my mate has a new shape Mini Cooper that needs it battery replacing..but as the car doesnt get driven much and sit around for long period of times it doesnt seem to hold charge...

What is the best battery he could get?? The bloke at Mini has confused him by offering him Lead Acid, Calcium or a Silver battery lol

Exide/Optima bluetop deep cycle battery. Not cheap though, but perfect for your needs.

True about the car alarm etc draining it. Surely it would be more wise to buy a cheaper battery and one of those solar trickle charger things?

I run a Halfords battery on my Esc Cos and Skoda. Cheaper if you have a trade card The Esc Cos is on a Optimate 4 trickle charger, which costs about £45 delivered. Worth the money if your cars hardly used

buy a trickle charger. iv got one for the saff, does what it says on the tin. cant remember the name of it tho...effectively it 'smart charges' the battery (ie on and off when need be) and has quick release gubbins so that u dont need to arse about with it too much. h

have a search on ere mate, thats how i found out about it. Needless to say Euro Car parts sell them

You can get the C-TEK one from Lidl for £15, just in a different wrapper.
If it's sat for long periods, the last thing you need is a deep cycle battery, the self discharge is much higher on these, the only advantage is less damage when flattened.
You need a AGM, absorbed glass matt, or GEL as some call them, BUT be careful, if the mini has a calcium as standard then calcium it will need to be, as the charge rate is slightly higher, no good for agm or lead acid.
If not calcium get a AGM, around £120-£200 depending on which one, but these have less than 1/4 the self discharge rate of the std lead acid battery, and up to around 100% more perfomance with the right one, they resist lower temps vastly better as well, the spiral cell AGM in particular.
