Changed my broardband provider !!!
i have been with BT for years, and its slowly got worse and worse. VERY SLOW connections...
I decided to change to SKY and they said they could give me 20MB/s but they tested the line and they said i would only get 0.5 mb/s from any adsl provider
so i told them not to bother and i gave virgin a call and ordered their 10MB/s package.
Tested the speed and the results are below
God knows why my ADSL will only give me 0.5mb/s, if anyone else is having the same problems, i would give virgin a call

im only about 1/2 a mile from the local telephone exchange where the ADSL comes from, but they still said it was a 0.5MB/s line
Virgin connection is gr8, only thing is, the modem and router they supply is crap looking and white, my bt one was shiny black to match my surround sound my tv and phone.
I think a trip to pc world for a posh black cable wireless router is on the cards

Rich, have you got the wireless router and dongle from Virgin too? I think it is Netgear they recommend. Just be mindful if you plan on deviating from
Netgear. I had real problems when trying to use my previous router.

ive been told if the exchange is full, as in everyone in your area is having adsl broardband, they cant supply decent speeds, thats supposed to be whats wrong round here. so there must be one broadband line comming into the exchange and its shared out between everyone ???
Anyone know ???

sounds like the contention ratio is too high rich.
basically you're kind of right... the exchange equipment gets shared out between the broadband subscribers conencted to that exchange, so you could be sharing the kit with 50 or 100 other people.
that's one of the main differences between home and business broadband (or at lest it used to be) - home broadband might be a contention ration of up to 50:1 for example (i.e. 50 people sharing the kit) and business more like 20:1.. meaning that when everyone's online in the evening and their broadband speeds drop, the business users receive a higher speed connection.

Remember guys that at peak times, like last night, they will reduce everyone's speed anyway. For e.g., I usually get about 7 or so during the day(on an 8 meg package) and 3 meg or lower at peak times.
They also cut your speed down if you're a heavy user.

Be Unlimited, isn't that an ADSL2+ line, not standard ADSL, thats why its so quick?

I use o2 broadband. I have the middle package (upto 20meg I think it is) and I pay less than £10 per month, but I do have a mobile contract with them. I would highly reccomend o2 aswell. If you get any probs its a fre call (even from your mobile) to there tech team

Pretty poor result
Considering we are on a 10Mbps dedicated line. Probably all the monitoring, proxies, firewalls and other crap in the way that slows it all down...
Hopefully it will be upgraded to 100Mb later in the year
