Default Need a nice cheap drift car

Hopefully gonna go to santa pods Drift Wot U Brung Day and was wondering if any one could give me any advice on a nice cheap drift car for the day. I'm a complete novice but thought it would be a laugh and always fancied giving it a go. I was thinking of a e30 bmw. Does the car have to have a lsd?

get a cheap bmw or manual omega or something imo, strip it out and job done

they have a tyre chagning and disposing facility there

Have you been there before mate? Is drifting fairly easy to pick up and do they offer any tuition on the day. What sort of power do i need to go for, something like a 320i or 325i? Cheers for the advice mate.

they dont do tutuion, but you can do a passenger run with somebody you know for Ł10

id imagine its easy to pick up, slow in accerate after turning in and hold the opposite lock till your back on the straight!?

they have a play pin for beginners to learn it so you wont be on your own if your in experienced, then they have a kindney shaped track for you to learn how to get it round corners more and link them up etc, and finally a pro track that resembles a championship track.

power isnt really important, dont learn to run before you can walk, you dont want something thatll kill you when you accerate mid corner. over 100bhp would be great imo

no ive never been, im not even old enough to drive yet

You'll get on a lot better with a welded diff, or a decent mechanical LSD.
You can drift with an open diff or a viscous LSD, but these aren't going to help half as much. Down to budget and if you want to handicap yourself with crapness to make your driving better in the long run?

E36 BMW is the Trampdrifters typical weapon of choice these days... as there's tons about and they give the most power for pound.

But Saph + Welder gets my vote
Perfect to learn in as it's not too forgiving, but not so hard as to spoil the fun...

good start would be to try the drift related forums, driftworks, trampdrift ect.
e30s are a good choice, but id get a cheap 325 over anything and weld it. if you get a 320 itll do but by the end of the first day drifting you'll be planning a 25 engine swap or sell altogether.
i wouldnt even bother going drifting without a very good lsd or a welded preferably.
youll have enough to be concentrating on without trying to get a shit lsd to lock
good luck!

Turn one way, blip accelerator (and rag foot off clutch to wheelspin), then turn opposite way and add power as and when required - Car goes sideways. Simples!

Just takes a few practises on B&Q carpark to get your pedal control good.

Best time to learn is on a rainy day. Dont need to use silly power on wet surfaces to get her sideways....

Tis still good (and safer) to get a little practise in a FWD car using the handbrake on a gravel surface to get to knowlege what going sideways feels like. RWD is a whole new kettle of fish when you're using power to throw the back end out.

Didn't the S15 have a torsen diff rather than the viscous one as on the UK S14 and S14s?

Apologies if they also did them with VLSDs in - just interested to know.

I know the S13s and S14s came with diff coolers but they're also temp and speed switch activated IIRC - the S13 something like 130 deg C + 5mph to start cooling ...and the S14 something like 130 deg C and about 70mph + to start cooling. Hence most people find their cooler had never been used?

When I went to a DWYB day there were instructors there to jump in and give you tuition.

Well worth doing IMHO, as I certainly learnt from the fella who jumped in with me, main mistake I was making was too much throttle, common learner error apparently!

Viscous diffs don't lock predictably, often not completely and are usually worn which makes the initial problems worse.

But saying that you can make any car go sideways, just certain things make life easier for the driver.

i would use an e36 as can be had cheaper than e30s - more parts, better engines and build quality.

If you need parts for an E30 i still have loads left from my drifter that never made it on the road as I gave up due to time constraints.

2.7 anyone?

an omega is a boat no one looking to get into drifting seriously is going to pick one are they it may go out but thats only half the battle its keeping it out and there hardly going to be very well balanced / driveable on the limit

A V6 Omega is one of the best budget drifters out there just now!
Soft suspension, but all big barges like that have soft suspension to start with.

Just another big saloon like a 5 series or Chaser etc, and they're used commonly in drifting.

Oh and BTW: Get a Sierra/Saff...

Drifting is not hard at all. Our grandfathers used to do it every winter in their Cortinas and Capris yet they didn't make a bloody fuzz about it...

That closed minded mentality is the part of drifting that makes me despair
That's why every competitive drift event is made up of 90% of S body Nissans and Skylines....

Yeah they do the job, but why do you want to do it in the same car as everyone else?! The more variety in drifting the better I say.
Exactly the reason why I'm going to be using both a Sierra and then a Capri in the BDC very soon.

No mate, it's because a big part of the scene is just chavs who've watched too much of "The Fast and The Furious".

Drifting used to be an underground thing but during the last few years it's become fancy and is now attracting all kind of idiots.

And the whole Japanese cult is really getting on my tits. Chavs all over the country are worshipping some weird japanese self-called driftheroes who were probably rejected by proper racing teams cause they didn't have a clue how to drive a proper clean lap.

As said above... Our dad's had already been going sideways in their Mk1 Escorts when the Japs hadn't sold a single car in Europe yet. Don't get me wrong, I like japanese cars and I've got an MR2 myself but I just hate when things get blown out of proportion by blind followers...

Rant over!

Owning japanese cars doesn't make you chav.

I was talking about people who buy one because they've seen it in a movie and because all of their mates in mcdonalds car park have one, too ... And because it does fully sik donuts, innit!
