Some power is back on now, Sainsbury Castle Marina for example.

It was an explosion and fire that caused the problem,
there has been a suggestion of a death however, if so that'll be the guy with the hacksaw.

My mate is an electrician, he was digging a hole to inspect the main cable the feeds half of Bath, but the cable wasn't as deep in the ground as it should have been, so he went straight through, gave the fucker a bit of a fright!

Apparantely if he werent wearing his special gloves he'd have been killed!

same sort of thing happened here in the summer, some pikeys decided to try and steal some copper wires from a substation in dartford, and when they couldn't, they set fire to it, knocking out power to most of the dartford postcode. a week with only power for 3 hours a day was proper shit! And it was a week I'd booked off work!!!!! cunts.

But what exactly fueled the explosion though? What ignited to produce that huge fireball?

As someone who works in substations, this post made me shudder!

"Some guy got toasted"?

If any of this is true, then someones son, brother or father suffered a horrible horrible death in a boiling oil fireball.

Hope your computer is ok!!

EDIT: Just found this:

Neil Williamson, from Highfield Station, said:

"The premises were secure when the firefighters arrived. It is hard to tell what the cause is. It is unlikely to be suspicious. There was no one in the building at the time of the fire. It's difficult because the access is awkward.."

So it seems no one got toasted

well thats nice to know, I am not the type to say that, but very stressed at the mo.

Well the genny is still running, it only holds 100l of derv so there is two people refueling it every two hours though out the night.

If we have to go DR that my weekend FUCKED

suprised you dont have more than one grid connection (i.e. from a different primary) as most data centres do these days.

Shit news. What industry does your datacentre support? Retail / Banking / e-commerce? A similar thing happened to me last year and we had to do a controlled power down while racing against guys filling up the generator. Especially difficult for disk arrays like your clarions and unix systems that can take up to an hour to close down and the same again to start up. Our datacentre (Glasgow) supports 300 shops but we have redundant set of servers in London so if the worst happens the shops can still trade and accept plastic so although it was a PITA it wasn't the end of the world.

Hope it gets resolved soon so you can get your weekend back. I bet your partner isn't chuffed at you having to work and cancel whatever you had planned. Been there...

i remember during 9/11 my old company had a major telco switch in new york (nortel dms, along with 13 others across the globe), it wasnt that far from the twin towers and had no power for a good few days and the gennies were giving up, they caused a lot of issues as four of us had to rewrite the 13 other switches to stop pointing traffic towards nyc, that was a shit load of coding to do inside a day,

just as we had nearly finished, we found out power was restored, wasnt a happy bunny then, but of course we relised it could be worse

are you sure?! When I was doing the Savoy, the jointers mate who was stood next to the guy when he died wouldnt agree with you, just cos they are contracting for EDF doesnt mean EDF hasnt killed them, had a good few acccidents on Heathrow site aswell although thankfully it wasnt a fatalaty.

edit to say, now I think about it, it was just before christmas 2008 we did the savoy and that lad died. Was a quick year 2009
