is it illegal or a mot failure to chop the backbox of and weld a bit of pipe in its place.just curious i want a bit of a noise but dont see the point of fitting an after market zorst as i dnt want it seen?

yes it is MOT fail cut it open and take the baffles out then weld it back up

no it is not a mot failure as long as the noise is within the legal limits they can not fail something if it is not there

i choped the back box off a escort cosworth replica so the exhurst would come out where it should and it passed its mot

I chopped my centre silencer out and it passed. I think as long as it's not blowing or unreasonably loud it's a pass.

There is no requirement to have any boxes, or even a cat, if you car passes emission without cat it passes the test simple as, unlikely to though.
As regards back box missing not a concern of the mot, it doesn't have to have one, but if excessively noisy can be failed for this.
If the guy is going 100% by the book of rules, ANY alteration toany part the manufacturer fitted can fail the car.
