Your getting old fella. What do you have to do to the evos to get them to 450.

Biggest issue is the conrods.

Other than that its just like fitting a T34 to a cossie really, ie remap, exhaust, filter, and the turbo

It's a no brainer, if you want to be the fastest thing on the road/ track, buy an evo
if you want to have a very quick and capable car, that is full of character and fun buy a cossie.

I have a Ducati 996, it is not the fastest bike around, but would I swap it for an R1 or gixxer? Would I fuck! Somtimes it's not always about the n'th degree of performance, it's about the way it makes YOU feel.....

TOTALLY agree about that way they make you feel comment.

DISAGREE about the 'no brainer' thing. Evo's are fun and have character as well.....

some times people confuse 'character' with 'being old and breaking down alot'

and THEN... they use the words 'character and fun' to make up a reason to keep their old cars

when really they would be having MORE fun in newer and FAR better machines! (and actually driving the cars, instead of fixing them!!!)

If you like the escos and 916 because they LOOK good or you like the Brands and image or heritage and owners clubs. ( and you like breaking down!) then thats cool!!!

but they are thet only reasons to hang on in my opinion.

Cars are only machines.... things that you use. When technology moves on, its 'normally' but not always better.

Its not like we are all sitting here on Commodore 64's and Spectrums.

Wil I don't know much about you.... but from what I do know. The BEST thing you ever do with be selling ALL your cossies and cossies bits and getting one newer and nicer car to enjoy!

Porkie, when I said no brainer I meant that the Evo is obviously the better choice in 99% of departments. You have to REALLY want a Cosworth to own one, or you would be far better off buying somthing like an Evo for pure performance reasons, much like why I have a 996 not a jap four.

I have driven quite a few mates evos from 5-8, and still think they are a bit boring to be honest , just don't do it for me.

I sold my 3 door cossie 4 years ago now after i spent circa 20k (including purchasing) i even bought a 200 block off you dave but it was fooked dont know if you remember, but as much as i loved the car i had to sell it as it was a constant drain on the wallet and plus would never take it anywhere where i couldnt keep a eye on it so never got to drive that much so thaught sod it and sell up and have a year out, after about 4 months i got itchy feet and bought another RST which i wish i hadnt as it was shite after owning a cossie for 4 yrs snd felt slow with a shit gearbox and turbo went afther 1k miles

then sold that and put all my money into my new house and thaught no more fast cars for me but again got itch and so i would try a evo and tbh i wish i had bought one instead of the 3 door cos it has been 100% reliable i dont worry about leaving it anywhere and it out performs the cossie.

it does get a little boring always arriving at your destination.... I'll give you that!

I'm sure the EVO's can be modded to make you like them more very easily....

also you won't get to love one over just a quick drive. Its the 'ownership' experience I think you will grow to love.

I like Evos. I like Porsches and BMW M cars more though.... I think you would as well

I've got an m3 that us fast enough for 99% of the time, the ONLY thing I've had to do is a pair of lambas and a couple of oil changes.
It's a great car and much better than my Cossie engined 5, but I still love tinkering/fixing/driving that.
I should really sell both and move on up, for what they both owe me I could b in a much better car but can't bring myself to do it.

I just cant bring myself to buy a car that depriciates like fuck

I have an old sierra in the garage that i've had now 15 months and it's probably gone UP in value!

What will an evo 9 lose in 15 months?

My 3 dr is there as my ferarri deposit really as if i sell it the cash will be blown!

Especially when you consider the difference in fuel bills!

Evo:
Ring trip * 2 = 1000
10 * UK track days = 1200
Use having fun of an evening over the year = 1800

= 4K

Cossie:
trip to MOT to get failure sheet = Ł1.60

Thats a massive Ł3998.40 a year you will save having the cossie

You mean a nice sensible / reliable power level - you know, like your Cossie was BEFORE you went stupid on it .

people buy cossies cause they like them. People buy old triumph stags cause they like them. Its just like a collectors car. Must people have a newer car to use most of the time and they use there old cars for shows and get them out every now and then.

Agreed, no intention of letting my 3 door go just yet, even though I encounter better cars reguarly.

It still makes me smile just to look at it when I drag it out of the garage, always wanted one, EVO wouldnt do the same for me even though its better, its a just yet another great car, its not the car I wanted as a kid.

Plus I quite like the 3door trying to kill me everytime I press the loud pedal, with its 80s backend swinging around like a dog wagging its tail

Keeping my Saph Glennyboy, no chance of me getting rid of her. Mines reliable apart from the gearbox on track days

I think you need to qualify that statement - what you REALLY mean is:

I disagree, especially the active yaw control working to stop oversteer on the non RS models.

If I lose the backend of a car, let me, its my fault, so let me crash

Interested what anyone else who has been in Jap cars for years has moved on to. For example a friend of mine who had always been into Jap cars who has had big power R33's, R34's, Scooby RA's etc (granted not Evo's) reckons he has more fun now in his Exige S then he ever did in the Jap stuff. Although the Jap stuff did break a lot in his experience mainly gearbox's and turbos thou.. so he did have a similar paranoia to Cosworth paranoia only it was more expensive

the evo is like your mrs, dependable and reliable
the cossie is like your bit on the side, you never know whats going to go on but whatever happens it's either going to leave you with a massive bill or feeling like the luckiest person on the planet

no i have a gsr. but ayc IS shite, which is why i'm fitting an rs rear diff to mine. But even a gsr is still not 'one big computer'. be honest when pushing the car to its limits AYC can sometimes be more of a hinderence rather then a driver aid

So you are removing the AYC from yours, so you can actually drive it yourself instead of the computer doing it, but you bitch at people when they moan there are too many computers?

Still none the wiser. I have had 3 pm's already asking for 1st dibs on this that and the other and i have only mentioned maybe breaking it

Edit to say - i really want to start doing track days in the cossie but to make it handle even reasonably well i need a rear beam Ł1k minimum

i just get in my cossie and not worry about it. Ok im always checking the road to make sure there are no pot holes but i do that with other cars. Ive drove a few evos when i worked for mitsubushi and they were nice to drive and went well. I would have a evo 8 but if i had the choice between a evo or a escos it would have to be the escos for me.

The choice isnt between an evo or escos - its between a saff and an evo

I,ve OBVIOUSLY been VERY lucky in my 9-10yrs of Cosworth ownership then, because i,ve never had one failure yet......(words kiss of death spring to mind) mind you, i,ve had 4 Evos inbetween too

I think if mapped, built, MAINTAINED properly they can be AND are a reliable car...

Yes we all know when opting for 450+ bhp and Torque diffs/boxes etc WILL die, but again, build it once properly and hopefully it,ll be fine...

Rich,

Think long & hard mate cus when i met you awhile back now @ Sheady,s you were SO bullish about your saff and i agree with Chip etc, it,s not all about the fastest A to B cars your saff is a well speced proper car mate and i really think you would miss it.. I THINK....
