Default Road tax ? How much

Hi , I,m looking to get myself a jeep for about the £4000 mark,Probably a big petrol engined one as I do very little milage ,I was just curious as to what the crack is with the price of the road tax,I,ve heard off a pal that if its after 2001 it can cost me as much as £400 a year , is this true,cheers,Darren.

Yeah, basically anything 'Y' reg or older and you should be safe!

x reg or older, y came out march 2001, my mates focus is a Y reg and got clobbered by higher tax because its a 2.0, Y reg should have been 01 but they ran the letters out before starting the numbers so numbers started september with the 51 plate.

Quite right bj928. Too much snow here forcing me to stay in, drink too much lager and not think properly. X reg or older for cheaper tax, as you say.

My old 02 reg 4.6 V8 X5 was £220 a year.

It's only cars registered on 23rd March 2006 and after [and greater than 225 G/KM] that fall into the £405 a year tax bracket.
