what starter motor are you using
as if its like the diesal ones then they work on a pulsing system which will interfere when cranking
i had this on my van which i converted to ofac fiesta turbo but the fault was: taking ages to start

Route the cable away from the starter and the alternator including any of the wires to both of these components.

Assuming the ecu is configured correctly,......

....Check you have the polarity of the sensor correct

Its been a while since I looked at a 36-1 set up myself but from memory, the teeth are 10 deg apart with the missing tooth at 90 degrees BTDC so 9 teeth sounds right to me.

Disconnect the coil primary and the injectors and try cranking to see if the readings settle down.
if they dont, I reckon you have a wiring and/or configuration problem.

is the shield on the Crank sensor wire earthed at the ECU end (only apparently not sure why that makes a difference.. Simon might be able to say?? )

Yes it only needs earthing at the ecu end if it has one.

The ecu may need configuring for the correct sensor type though.
