reving like mad! why?

Default reving like mad! why?
hey all maybe somebody can help me

i drive an escort gti and when driving i put my foot down the rev counter just goes mad i could be in 5th gear and still feel like am in first gear..am thinkin a new clutch or possibly something to do with gearbox?

whats your advice? thanx alot guys

Yep deffo sounds like a slipping clutch to me if the engine revs independantly of the cars actual speed
