What are you using to control it in the first place?

Do you have a dual port solenoid?

For getting it up and running just plumb the pipe nearest the flange straight to the plenum and that will see you running around at wastegate pressure to run your engine in with.

If you have a 3 port boost control solenoid, you can use the vent port to feed the top of the wastegate to increase the boost pressure. I.e - if you vent to atmosphere and are currently running 14psi, if you feed the vent into the top of the gate, you could see 18psi.

All the top port does is pressurize the top of the diaphragm to counter the lift pressure.

To be honest, if the spring rating is correct in the wastegate and the boost control is correctly mapped - then you should be ok without.

Officially, it can improve response/reduce lag by piping the vent port to the top of the gate, i've only ever personally found it useful when chasing ridiculous boost (3bar territory...).

Is it a Tial 38mm?

If so they tend to be about 12psi ish by default although different springs are available of course
